Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Fiancée

The aftermath of the engagement party became the stuff of legend among New York’s elite.
When Julian Vale returned to the ballroom without his fiancée, the whispers started immediately. When he calmly took the microphone and announced that the engagement was permanently canceled due to "irreconcilable differences of character," the shockwave rippled through the city's highest social circles.
By Monday morning, the truth had leaked. Not through gossip, but through a meticulously orchestrated PR campaign by Julian's firm that exposed Celeste Ashford’s history of corporate espionage, slander, and fraud within the modeling industry. Her agencies dropped her. Her sponsors vanished. The elite circles that had once courted her now treated her like a ghost.
Meanwhile, Mara’s life changed overnight.
Julian had personally driven her home that night. When he saw the cramped, freezing apartment she shared with her sister Chloe, he didn't offer pity. He offered action.
"You're not staying here," Julian had said, standing in her tiny living room.
"Julian, I can't just take your money," Mara argued. "I appreciate everything you did tonight, but I have to earn my own way."
"Then work for me," Julian replied instantly. "My charitable foundation needs a director who understands what it means to actually struggle, someone who won't just throw money at problems for tax write-offs. I need someone with your heart, Mara. Take the job. Let me pay Chloe’s tuition as a signing bonus."

Mara had looked at the silver locket resting against her chest, then up at the man who had kept his promise to find her, even if it took over a decade. She smiled, and for the first time in years, it reached her eyes.
"Okay," she said.
