Chapter 19 - Shadows Beneath the Blossom

While the estate basked in the serene glow of spring, the digital operations hub located three sub-levels beneath the main manor hummed with silent, vigilant activity. Marcus Vance stood before a towering wall of encrypted quantum monitors, reviewing the global data feeds from Citadel Alpha and the regional European syndicates.
A sudden, rhythmic amber pulse blinked on the diagnostic terminal—an anomaly so faint that standard automated security systems would have ignored it entirely.
Marcus leaned closer, tapping a sequence on his console to isolate the data packet. It was a localized network handshake originating from a decommissioned communications relay station off the coast of New England—a facility long since abandoned during the federal restructuring.
"That's odd," Marcus muttered to himself, his eyebrows furrowing. "Every legacy node in the North American sector was scrubbed six months ago."
He opened a secure, direct channel to Julian’s private study. Within seconds, Julian’s face appeared on the secondary monitor, his expression instantly shifting from relaxed partner to razor-sharp strategist.
"Report, Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into its cold, authoritative command register.
"We have a localized digital echo on an old sub-oceanic cable off the New England coast, sir," Marcus reported cleanly. "It’s not a threat to the global grid, but it’s using an archaic encryption handshake—one that hasn't been active since the old syndicate wars."
Julian glanced toward Mara, who had paused her work, her instincts immediately sharp. She walked over to the monitor, her eyes scanning the scrolling hexadecimal data streams.
"That's not a syndicate code," Mara said quietly, her voice tightening as recognition dawned. "That's an old emergency beacon frequency from the underground resistance cells. My father used that exact signature when he wanted to pass information without triggering federal wiretaps."

Julian’s gaze darkened. "Are you certain?"
"Positive," Mara nodded firmly. "Someone is trying to reach us. Or rather... they're trying to find out if anyone is still listening."
