Chapter 15 - The Question in the Golden Hour

The silence between them stretched, not with the awkwardness of unspoken words, but with the heavy, beautiful weight of a question that had been building for fourteen years. The sun hung low on the horizon, bathing the entire valley in a breathtaking wash of gold, orange, and violet.

Julian reached into his pocket and withdrew a small, dark velvet box. It was unassuming in its elegance, perfectly mirroring the understated power of the man holding it.

Mara’s breath hitched in her throat. Her amber eyes widened slightly, her gaze dropping from his face to the velvet box and back up again. The world around them seemed to fade away entirely—the rustling jasmine, the distant splash of the koi pond, the fading light of the spring evening—all of it dissolved into nothingness, leaving only the two of them standing in the center of their universe.

"I was thinking," Julian murmured, his voice thick with emotion, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unwavering devotion. "This locket is beautiful, Mara. It has kept you safe, and it has kept my heart anchored through every storm we've ever faced. But... it's starting to look a little lonely."

A trembling, radiant smile broke across Mara’s face, moisture gathering instantly at the corners of her eyes. "Are you... are you proposing to your foundation director during work hours, Mr. Vale?" she whispered, her voice teasingly light despite the overwhelming emotion threatening to overflow.

Julian smiled back, a soft, breathless laugh escaping his lips as he dropped smoothly onto one knee on the flagstone path.

"I'm proposing to the girl who saved my life in a garden fourteen years ago," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "I'm proposing to the woman who built an empire of her own, who healed my soul, and who taught me what it means to truly live. I spent half my life building walls to keep the world out, but the moment you walked back into my life, I realized I only ever wanted to let you in."

He popped the velvet box open. Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring—a brilliant, flawless diamond flanked by two delicate sapphire stones, catching the dying golden light of the sunset like captured stars.

"Marry me, Mara," Julian whispered, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "Let's make this home permanent. Let's face every sunrise and every sunset together, for the rest of our lives. I am never letting you go."

Mara didn't hesitate for a single microsecond. Tears of pure joy spilled over her lashes as she dropped to her knees right beside him, throwing her arms around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder.

"Yes," she sobbed softly against his collarbone, her voice muffled but fiercely clear. "Yes, Julian. A thousand times, yes."
