Chapter 32 - Securing the Core

The corridors of the orbital relay station grew colder as Mara pressed deeper into the station's core. Frost clung to the corners of outdated ventilation grates, and the low, mechanical groans of the aging structure echoed through her boots. Suddenly, the corridor ahead flooded with harsh, crimson emergency lighting as a squad of automated security turrets dropped from the ceiling ceiling-mounts, their targeting lasers locking onto her position with an ominous whine.

Mara didn't flinch. In a fraction of a second, she dropped into a low slide along the metallic floor, raising her tactical sidearm and discharging two precisely aimed high-velocity rounds into the central processing nodes of the primary turret. Sparks showered the corridor as the machine sputtered and went dead.

Using the disabled turret as cover, she pivoted smoothly, firing three more rounds that shattered the optical sensors of the remaining units before they could calculate a return trajectory. The hallway fell silent once more, save for the hum of her own breathing apparatus.

"Hostile defenses neutralized," Mara reported, rising smoothly to her feet and stepping past the smoking wreckage. "Approaching the master quantum server room now."

Arriving at a massive, blast-shielded vault door bearing the faded insignia of the old-world shadow coalition, Mara connected her portable decryption interface directly into the station's manual override port. Streams of complex code scrolled across her wrist-mounted screen as Citadel Alpha's master core began brute-forcing the ancient encryption protocols.

"Encryption bypassed," Marcus confirmed from the command hub. "Downloading core memory banks now. We have access to all of their global sleeper cell locations, communication frequencies, and leadership manifests."

Suddenly, the red emergency lights flashed furiously as a warning message blared across Mara's HUD. "Warning! Enemy system override detected! They're initiating a forced purge of the physical storage drives!"

Mara’s eyes hardened with fierce resolve. She reached into her combat harness, pulling out a heavy data-siphon spike, and drove it directly into the master override port with a decisive slam. "Not on my watch. Reroute the quantum surge through my siphon! Take every byte before they can touch the delete button!"
