Chapter 37 - The Final Stand of the Old Guard

The firefight in the subterranean halls of Project Chimera was short, brutal, and entirely one-sided. Deprived of centralized tactical support and facing an enemy equipped with superior quantum-linked weaponry, the automated defense units and remaining human garrison guards were systematically dismantled room by room.
Mara walked at the head of her advancing unit, her boots echoing rhythmically across the metal grating of the central command gallery. Ahead of her stood the master control terminal of the facility—a massive, circular console surrounded by flickering monitors and banks of obsolete magnetic storage drives.
Hunched over the console, frantically attempting to initiate a manual purge of the facility's heavy weapon schematics, was a high-ranking old-world officer in a tarnished, dust-covered uniform. As Mara's shadow fell across the glowing screens, the officer froze, slowly turning around with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"You... you're just a warlord of the wasteland," the officer spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer terror. "You don't understand the grand design! We built the modern world! We are the architects of human civilization!"
Mara stepped closer, her expression ice-cold, carrying the unyielding weight of an entire era that had risen from the ashes of his failure. "You built a cage of fear and called it civilization," Mara replied, her voice cutting through the hum of dying servers with absolute authority. "The old world died because it was weak, arrogant, and blind to the future. And you are just a ghost refusing to accept that your time has passed."
Before the officer could reach for the manual override lever, Thomas stepped forward and pinned his hand to the console with a swift, practiced motion, relieving him of his sidearm in a single fluid movement.

"The facility's production schematics and energy weapon blueprints have been fully secured and locked into our network," Julian reported from the diagnostic terminal nearby, looking up with a satisfied grin. "Project Chimera is ours, My Liege. There are no other active manufacturing hubs left on the global grid."
Mara looked down at the defeated officer, her gaze devoid of pity or malice—only the pure, unadulterated clarity of a queen surveying a conquered province. "Lock him in the lower detention tier with the rest of the vanguard," she commanded quietly. "Let him spend his remaining days contemplating the world he failed to control."
