Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

The security room fell dead silent. The confession hung in the air, heavy and toxic. Celeste breathed heavily, her chest heaving, a twisted smile of triumph on her face, as if believing that confessing her brilliance would somehow make Julian respect her ruthlessness.
She had profoundly miscalculated.
Julian Vale did not respect ruthlessness when it was wielded against the innocent. He despised it.
"Vance," Julian said without taking his eyes off Celeste. "Did you record all of that?"
"Audio and video, sir," Vance replied, his hand resting on the console.
Celeste’s twisted smile vanished instantly. "Wait... Julian, you can't be serious. You're not going to throw away our engagement over a washed-up maid. We're a power couple. Our families—"
"Are done," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal calm. "Your family's investments in my holding companies will be liquidated by morning. Your reputation in this city will be dismantled before the sun rises. And if you ever step foot near Mara, or my niece, again, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary for attempted extortion and fraud."
"You can't do this to me!" Celeste shrieked, lunging forward.
Vance stepped in smoothly, catching Celeste by the arm and twisting it just enough to stop her in her tracks.
"Escort Ms. Ashford to the street," Julian ordered. "Do not let her pack her things. Have her belongings boxed and shipped to her parents' estate. She is no longer welcome on any property I own."
"Julian! You'll regret this!" Celeste screamed as Vance dragged her out of the security room. Her voice echoed down the hallway, growing fainter and fainter until the heavy front doors slammed shut, cutting her off completely.
Julian stood in the quiet room, the heavy burden of the past ten years seemingly lifting from his shoulders. He turned back to Mara.
She was trembling, clutching the silver locket against her chest, overwhelmed by the rapid, violent turn of events.
"Mara," Julian said softly, stepping closer. "I am so incredibly sorry. For everything she did to you. For not finding you sooner."
May you like
"You didn't know," Mara whispered, wiping her eyes. "You couldn't have known."
Julian reached out, gently taking her hand. His thumb brushed over her knuckles. "I know now. And I am never letting you disappear again."
