Chapter 1 - "His Fiancée Hid the Maid’s Face and Framed Her for Theft—Then the Billionaire Played the Security Footage and Recognized Her Silver Locket

“Cover your face.”

Celeste Ashford’s voice was nearly swallowed by the music drifting through the marble hallway, but the words struck Mara Ellison like a slap.

Beyond the dining-room doors, forty of New York’s wealthiest families were gathering to celebrate Celeste’s engagement to billionaire Julian Vale.

Inside the service corridor, Celeste held out an ivory silk scarf.

“Put it on.”

Mara stared at her. Eleven years earlier, they had modeled for the same agency. Back then, Celeste had smiled for cameras while quietly destroying anyone who threatened to outshine her.

Now Mara was a maid in her fiancé’s mansion.

And Celeste was terrified someone might recognize her.

“I’m serving dinner,” Mara said. “I can’t work with fabric over my mouth.”

“Then cover your hair and cheeks.”

“Why?”

Celeste stepped closer, diamonds glittering at her throat.

“Because tonight is important.”

Mara wanted to drop the scarf at her feet. But her younger sister’s tuition deposit was due in twelve days, and losing this job would destroy the one future Mara still had the power to protect.

Celeste seemed to read the surrender in her silence.

“No one important asks questions about maids,” she whispered.

Mara tied the silk around her face, leaving only her eyes uncovered.

Minutes later, she entered the candlelit dining room carrying champagne.

Guests stared, then looked away.

At the center table sat Julian Vale.

Mara leaned forward to refill his water glass.

Julian stopped speaking.

His eyes lifted to hers.

“What happened to your face?” he asked.

Across the table, Celeste answered immediately.

“She had some kind of cosmetic procedure.”

Julian slowly turned toward his fiancée.

“Did she?”

Before Mara could speak, a seven-year-old girl pointed across the table.

“But she wasn’t hiding yesterday.”

The room went silent.

Julian placed his wineglass down and looked directly at Mara.

“Who told you to wear that scarf?”
