Chapter 30 - Preparations for the Void

The subterranean launch bay beneath the Vale estate echoed with the metallic clanks of hydraulic lifts and the hiss of pressurized nitrogen lines. Massive blast doors at the far end of the bay parted slowly, revealing the sleek, angular profile of the Aegis-IV, an advanced aerospace interceptor designed for rapid atmospheric transit and orbital insertion. Its matte-black hull absorbed the harsh overhead lighting, giving it a predatory, silent appearance.
Inside the armory alcove adjacent to the launch bay, Mara strapped on her reinforced tactical combat harness, sliding high-velocity magazines into her vest pouches with practiced, mechanical precision. Every piece of equipment—from the titanium-weave bodysuit to the encrypted comms unit clipped to her collar—bore the emblem of her reigning house.
Thomas walked into the armory, carrying a specialized magnetic grappling rifle and setting it down gently on the workbench. "All systems on the interceptor are green, Mara. Quantum navigation is locked onto the equatorial relay's orbital plane. You'll have a clean insertion vector with zero radar cross-section."
Mara picked up her helmet, checking the heads-up display integration before setting it down beside her. She looked at Thomas, her expression softening just a fraction. "And the estate security? While I'm in orbit, I need to know the home front is completely secure against any secondary incursions."
"Locked down tighter than a vault," Thomas assured her with a confident nod. "Julian is managing the ground defense grid alongside Marcus. Any unauthorized signal or physical approach will be intercepted before they even cross the perimeter fence."
Julian jogged into the bay, holding a glowing data tablet that displayed real-time orbital trajectories. "Mara, we just intercepted a faint burst transmission originating from the enemy's orbital relay. It looks like they're trying to initiate an automated self-destruct sequence to wipe their core memory banks before we can capture their data."
Mara’s eyes narrowed. "They'd rather burn their own history than let us read it." She immediately reached for her helmet, securing it over her head and activating the internal seal with a sharp, mechanical click. "Then we don't have a second to waste. If they want to burn their secrets, we'll pull them out of the ashes."

She stepped up the boarding ramp of the Aegis-IV, turning back one last time to look at her most trusted advisors. "Hold the line down here. I'll see you when the stars belong to us."
With a deafening roar of ion thrusters, the interceptor lifted off the magnetic launch sled, shooting up through the vertical silo like a bolt of dark lightning toward the endless expanse of the void.
