Chapter 36 - The Alpine Vault

Surrounded by towering, snow-capped peaks that pierced the cold morning sky, the entrance to Project Chimera was disguised as an abandoned meteorological research station perched precariously on a jagged cliffside. For centuries, the massive steel blast doors had remained hidden behind thick layers of glacial ice and reinforced rock, shielded from prying eyes and automated geological scanners alike.

Now, those doors were grinding open under the merciless pressure of heavy explosive charges and synchronized cutting lasers.

Mara stood atop a rocky outcropping overlooking the landing zone, her heavy combat trench coat snapping in the freezing alpine wind. Behind her, a full platoon of elite Vale tactical operators moved with synchronized precision, securing the perimeter and establishing a secure uplink to Citadel Alpha's master network.

"Thermal scans confirm the interior is partially active," Julian reported over the encrypted tactical channel, monitoring the telemetry feed from a mobile command terminal set up near the lead transport vehicle. "Automated internal defense systems are powering up, but their primary mainframe is completely isolated. They have no communication with the outside world."

"They're cut off, blind, and trapped in their own vault," Mara said, drawing her sidearm and checking the chamber with a sharp, metallic click. "Let's remind them what happens when ghosts try to outlive their time."

With a swift hand gesture, she led the vanguard charge through the smoking threshold of the blast doors. The interior of the bunker was a labyrinth of cavernous assembly halls, automated manufacturing lines, and darkened control rooms coated in a fine layer of dust and frost. Rows of dormant mechanical arms hung limply from overhead tracks, while massive crates of old-world ordnance sat stacked against reinforced concrete walls, untouched since the day the world collapsed.

As they pressed deeper into the central control complex, the eerie silence of the abandoned facility was suddenly broken by the harsh whining of motorized treads and the crimson glow of activation lights.

"Ambush!" Thomas shouted, dropping to one knee as a pair of heavy, armored security drones rounded the corner at the end of the corridor, twin rotary cannons spinning up with a deafening roar.

Mara didn't flinch. Moving with fluid, lethal grace, she vaulted over a steel workstation, using it as cover while firing a concentrated burst of armor-piercing rounds directly into the optical sensor array of the lead drone, disabling it instantly before its cannons could unleash a torrent of fire.
