Chapter 24 - The Revelation in the Depths

The small communications room grew dead silent as Thomas pulled up a series of encrypted files on the vintage monitor. The data streams were heavily redacted, bearing stamps from top-secret intelligence agencies that predated the global collapse.
"For years, we believed the syndicates seized power through pure economic dominance," Thomas explained, his hands steadying as he tapped away at the keyboard. "But look at the structural blueprints of the deep-sea energy grids—the very grids Julian and Mara secured last year."
Mara leaned over the console, her amber eyes narrowing as she studied the schematic wireframes. "These are older than Citadel Alpha. These designs date back to the late 1980s."
"Exactly," Thomas nodded grimly. "They weren't built by the syndicates. They were built by a shadowy coalition known as the Aegis Directorate—a group of corporate elites who deliberately engineered the Great Scarcity to force humanity into submission. When your grandfather tried to expose them, Mara, they destroyed his vessel."
Julian stepped closer, his dark eyes fixing on the data. "And what does this coalition want now?"
"They didn't disappear, Julian," Thomas said gravely. "They went into deep hibernation inside subterranean bunkers across the globe—including an automated command node hidden beneath the polar ice caps. My ping wasn't just a check-in. It was a warning tripwire. Their automated systems just woke up."

As if on cue, the entire underground bunker shuddered violently. The emergency lights flickered, turned blood-red, and a harsh, automated klaxon began to wail through the facility.
"System alert," a synthetic voice chimed from the terminal. "External perimeter breach detected. Unknown subsurface drone swarm approaching from the continental shelf."
