Chapter 10 - A New Chapter

Six months later, the sprawling gardens of the Vale estate were in full spring bloom. The air was warm, smelling of jasmine and fresh rain.
Mara sat on a stone bench overlooking the koi pond, a thick binder of foundation proposals resting in her lap. She wore a simple, elegant sundress, her hair falling freely in the wind. She was no longer hiding. She was thriving. The foundation had already funded three new scholarships and a community housing project under her direction.
"Mara! Look!"
Lily came sprinting across the grass, holding a meticulously folded origami swan.
Mara laughed, setting her binder aside and catching the little girl in a hug. "That's beautiful, Lily! You got the wings perfectly this time."
"Uncle Julian helped," Lily beamed, pointing back toward the patio.
Julian walked across the lawn toward them, his jacket off, the sleeves of his crisp white shirt rolled up to the elbows. He looked relaxed, happier than the ruthless billionaire the tabloids used to write about.
He sat down on the bench beside Mara, wrapping an arm naturally around her waist and pulling her close. He pressed a soft kiss to her temple.
"How's the new housing proposal looking?" Julian asked, glancing at the binder.
"It's perfect," Mara said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "We're going to break ground next month."
Lily climbed up onto the bench beside them, leaning against Mara's side. "Are we having pizza for dinner tonight?"
"Only if you eat your vegetables first," Julian teased, tickling his niece's side until she dissolved into giggles.
As Lily ran off to show her origami swan to the gardener, Julian turned to Mara. He reached up, his fingers brushing against the silver locket resting at her collarbone.
"I was thinking," Julian murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers, filled with a deep, unwavering love. "This locket is beautiful, but it's looking a little lonely. I think it might be time to add a ring to go with it."
Mara’s breath hitched, a bright, beautiful smile breaking across her face. "Are you proposing to your foundation director during work hours, Mr. Vale?"
May you like
"I'm proposing to the girl who saved my life in a garden fourteen years ago," Julian whispered, leaning in to capture her lips. "And I'm never letting her go."
As the sun set over the estate, casting a golden glow over the gardens, Mara knew that the shadows of her past were finally gone. She wasn't just a maid, and she wasn't just a survivor. She was home.
