Chapter 23 - Faces from the Lost Ledger

The man dropped the transceiver onto the metal desk. It clattered loudly against the surface. His eyes widened in absolute, stunned disbelief as he looked at Mara’s face, tracing the sharp lines of her features and the silver locket resting against her collarbone.
"Mara...?" the man whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "By all that's holy... I thought you went down with the northern convoy twenty years ago."
Mara froze, her breath catching in her throat as a wave of long-forgotten memories crashed over her. The voice, the weathered face, the scarred left eyebrow—it was a face she had wept over in dark, lonely rooms when she was just a child.
"Uncle Thomas...?" Mara breathed out, lowering her rifle as she stepped forward, disbelief warring with overwhelming realization. "You're alive?"
Thomas Vance—no relation to Marcus, but an old, trusted intelligence operative who had vanished during the initial syndicate purges—pushed himself up from the chair, stumbling slightly before rushing forward to pull Mara into a fierce, suffocating embrace.
"I went underground to protect the remaining archives," Thomas choked out, tears pooling in his eyes as he held her tight. "I didn't dare reach out, not while the syndicates were hunting every surviving bloodline associated with the resistance. I only sent the ping because... because I found something in the deep records that the world wasn't supposed to see."

Julian stepped into the light, his presence commanding yet calm as he observed the reunion. "What did you find, Thomas?"
Thomas looked up, releasing Mara and wiping his eyes with the back of his sleeve. He pointed a trembling finger at the glowing green monitor behind him. "I found proof that the global network wasn't just built on corporate power. It was built on a stolen foundation. And the people who engineered the fall of the old world... they're coming back."
