Chapter 7 - The Silver Locket

Julian stared at the screen, then slowly turned his head to look at the real Mara standing in his security room.
Without a word, he stood up, closed the distance between them, and gently reached out. Mara flinched, but his touch was incredibly soft. His fingers brushed against her collar, and he pulled the silver locket out into the light.
It was the exact same locket.
"Where did you get this?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion that shattered his usual icy demeanor.
"I... I've always had it," Mara stammered, looking up at him in confusion. "A boy gave it to me. A long time ago."
"Fourteen years ago," Julian corrected, his eyes locking onto hers, searching the depths of her face, seeing past the exhaustion, past the years of hardship, finally recognizing the soul beneath. "At a charity gala in Chicago. We were both teenagers. I was suffocating under the weight of my father's expectations, hiding in the gardens. You found me."
Mara’s breath hitched. Her eyes widened as she stared at the billionaire in front of her.
"You..." she whispered. "You were the boy in the gazebo."
"I told you I was going to run away," Julian said, a bittersweet smile touching his lips. "And you told me that running away was easy, but standing still and fighting took real courage. You sat with me for three hours. You saved my life that night, Mara. When my father’s security found me, I gave you my mother’s locket. I told you I would find you again."
"I never forgot you," Mara whispered, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "But I only knew your first name. And then my father died, and we moved to New York... I thought I'd never see you again."
"I hired private investigators for years trying to find the girl from the garden," Julian said, his voice filled with a mixture of awe and profound grief. "But they never found you."
"Because someone made sure she couldn't be found," a voice sneered from behind them.
They both turned. Celeste was leaning against the doorframe, her facade completely gone, replaced by a bitter, ugly hatred.
"Oh, this is incredibly touching," Celeste mocked, clapping her hands slowly. "The billionaire and the maid. A regular Cinderella story."
"What did you do, Celeste?" Julian asked, stepping in front of Mara protectively.
"Eleven years ago, Mara was the golden girl of our modeling agency," Celeste spat. "Everyone loved her. She was going to be the face of every major campaign. But she was naive. I found out she was looking for a rich boy from Chicago, clutching that stupid locket. So, I made a few phone calls. I started rumors. I made sure her agency dropped her, that the tabloids ruined her name. I erased her from the social map."

Mara stared at the woman who had ruined her life, feeling a sickening wave of betrayal. "Why? I never did anything to you."
"Because you were in my way!" Celeste screamed. She looked at Julian. "I knew who she was looking for, Julian. I recognized the description of the boy. I made sure she fell into the gutters so I could take her place on the runway, and eventually, her place beside you."
