Chapter 8 - The Bellini Ultimatum

The study grew instantly cold. Luca took the satellite phone from the security chief’s hand, his expression hardening into stone. He gestured for Claire to remain seated and hit the speakerphone button before placing the device in the center of the mahogany desk.

A harsh, raspy voice filled the quiet room—the voice of a man who commanded shipping lanes, labor unions, and political dynasties with an iron fist.

"Luca," Salvatore Bellini’s voice grated through the speaker. "I hear my daughter was sent back to Chicago like a common trespasser in the middle of the night. Care to explain what kind of game you’re playing?"

Luca leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk, his voice dropping into a register that was calm, measured, and utterly lethal.

"Salvatore," Luca replied smoothly. "Your daughter wasn't sent back for playing games. She was sent back for theft, corporate treason, and conspiring with my best man to execute a hostile takeover of my syndicate assets."

A heavy silence hung on the line from New York. When Salvatore spoke again, the rasp in his voice had turned razor-sharp.

"Those are serious accusations, boy. Vanessa is a Bellini. We don't steal—we negotiate. If there are financial discrepancies in the merger ledgers, we sit down at a table like civilized men and adjust the percentages. You don't dump my daughter on a highway over a bookkeeping dispute."

"It wasn't a bookkeeping dispute," Luca said. He glanced at Claire, then back toward the phone. "She had my best man sign off on fifty million in fraudulent wire transfers, and she had one of her thugs physically assault a member of my household staff to cover her tracks."

"A housemaid," Salvatore scoffed over the line. "You're tearing apart a multi-million-dollar syndicate alliance over a domestic employee?"

"That domestic employee happens to be running my forensic audits right now, Salvatore," Luca said, his voice slicing through the speaker with absolute authority. "And she just handed me the complete paper trail of every shell company Vanessa and Julian set up. Every account number, every forged signature, every wire transfer."

Another prolonged silence stretched across the phone line. In New York, the Don was calculating his losses, weighing the cost of a full-scale syndicate war against the humiliation of cutting his daughter loose.

"What do you want, Luca?" Salvatore finally asked, the fight draining from his voice, replaced by cold pragmatism.

"Three things," Luca replied without hesitation. "First, the formal dissolution of the engagement, announced publicly on your terms as a mutual parting of ways. Second, the immediate transfer of Vanessa’s minority shares in the Chicago dockyards back to my portfolio at zero cost. Third, Julian Vance stays in my custody until I decide what to do with him."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then tomorrow morning, the complete forensic audit file goes directly to the federal prosecutor's office in Manhattan, accompanied by sworn affidavits from my accounting team," Luca said evenly. "Your shipping lines will be tied up in federal asset-seizure hearings for the next ten years."

A harsh, bitter laugh echoed from the New York end of the line.

"You're a cold bastard, Luca Moretti," Salvatore muttered. "Done. The shares will be transferred by midnight. Keep Julian—he’s an idiot who deserves whatever he gets."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Luca sat motionless for a moment, staring at the blank screen of the satellite phone. Then he looked across the desk at Claire, who had listened to the entire exchange with a calm, analytical expression.

"Well," Claire said softly, breaking the silence. "That saves us a lot of litigation paperwork."
