Chapter 3 - The Gathering Below

Downstairs, the engagement dinner resumed its immaculate, terrifying facade of normalcy. To the thirty-three elite guests seated beneath the crystal chandeliers, nothing had fundamentally shifted. The wine glasses were refilled by silent, efficient waiters; the second course of roasted duck and truffled reduction was served with pristine timing; and the string quartet continued their classical repertoire without missing a beat.
At the center of it all sat Vanessa Bellini.
She wore her composure like a suit of armor. Her smile was bright, her laughter chimed at all the appropriate intervals, and she leaned in close toward the empty seat beside her—Luca’s empty seat—conversing animatedly with a city councilman about real estate acquisitions along the riverfront.
Yet, beneath her polished exterior, a microscopic tremor betrayed her. Every time the heavy double doors at the end of the grand dining hall creaked open, her eyes darted toward the entrance. Every time a footman approached with a fresh bottle of champagne, her fingers tightened imperceptibly around the stem of her crystal goblet.
Across the table, Julian Vance—Luca’s designated best man, impeccably tailored in a midnight-blue tuxedo—noticed her tension. He caught Vanessa's eye across the floral centerpiece, offering a micro-nod meant to reassure her.
Stay calm, his look communicated. He’s just dealing with staff discipline. It happens.
Vanessa forced her shoulders to relax, taking a slow sip of her vintage Pinot Noir. She reminded herself of her position. She was a Bellini. Her family controlled shipping logistics that fed half the city's import economy. Luca Moretti was powerful, yes, but alliances were built on mutual leverage. A mere housemaid with a bruised wrist and a clumsy excuse about a linen closet door could not possibly threaten an empire built on steel, silence, and mutual self-interest.
Or so she tried to convince herself.
At the head of the table, the empty chair remained a looming presence. The guests assumed the host was tending to urgent business calls—after all, a syndicate empire did not run itself, especially on a Saturday night with half the city’s political elite under one roof. Nobody dared ask where Luca had gone. In his world, questions were dangerous currency, and silence was the safest language.
At 9:45 PM, the dessert course was cleared. The murmur of polite conversation rose like a warm tide against the high vaulted ceilings. Vanessa raised her glass to toast the table, her voice ringing out clear and melodic across the room.
"To old partnerships," she announced, her eyes sweeping over the assembly with practiced grace, "and the new foundations we are building tonight."

The guests applauded, raising their glasses in unison.
None of them noticed that the security feed on the third-floor monitor had just completed its download, or that the digital file containing four damning photographs was already sitting in an encrypted folder on Luca Moretti’s private terminal.
