Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Gallery

The second-floor art gallery was vaulted, dimly lit, and lined with centuries-old oil portraits of men who had built the Moretti empire on blood, silence, and absolute loyalty. At this hour, the gallery was empty of guests, serving as a quiet buffer between the festive noise of the dining hall and the private residential quarters upstairs.

Vanessa Bellini stood near a massive marble fireplace at the far end of the gallery, staring blankly into a fire that wasn't burning. Her fingers were clenched so tightly around her silk handbag that her knuckles showed white.

The heavy double doors at the end of the hall swung open with a soft click.

She turned sharply, expecting to see Julian or one of the estate security guards. Instead, she saw Luca walking toward her alone. His stride was measured, his jacket still off, his shirtsleeves rolled up. There was no rage in his expression—only an absolute, terrifying stillness.

"You left the party early again," Vanessa said, trying to inject a playful, slightly haughty tone into her voice. "The guests are starting to wonder, Luca. It’s bad form to abandon your own engagement dinner."

Luca stopped ten feet away from her. He didn't smile. He didn't blink.

"The guests are eating my food, drinking my wine, and celebrating an arrangement that ended about twenty minutes ago," Luca replied quietly.

Vanessa’s breath hitched, though she forced her chin up. "What are you talking about?"

"Julian confessed."

The lie slipped from Luca’s lips with absolute conviction—a tactical probe designed to measure her reaction. It worked instantly. A tiny muscle beneath Vanessa’s left eye twitched, and the color vanished entirely from her cheeks.

"Julian wouldn't..." she started, her voice cracking slightly before she caught herself. "Julian has no idea what you're talking about. We are partners in this family, Luca. My father’s shipping lines secure your distribution channels across the entire Midwest. You can't just—"

"I didn't say anything about shipping channels, Vanessa," Luca interrupted smoothly. He took two steps closer to her. "I mentioned Julian. How did you know my business agreements were involved?"

Vanessa stared at him, her carefully constructed poise finally fracturing into jagged pieces. The mask of the elegant, untouchable fiancée slipped away, revealing the calculating strategist underneath.

"You're calling off the wedding over a housemaid?" she spat out, her voice rising in sharp disbelief. "Over some bruised fingers and a petty domestic dispute? My family will bury you in federal court filings before the week is out. Every port, every warehouse, every truckload of product you own will be tied up in litigation and ICE inspections!"

"Your family owns shipping routes," Luca said, his voice remaining chillingly calm. "I own the docks they dock at, the unions that unload them, and the federal judges who sign the injunctions. You forgot whose house you were trying to rob."

Vanessa’s eyes flared with pure venom. "You arrogant bastard. You really think you're untouchable, don't you? You think you can keep me around like a decorative vase until you get bored?"

"No," Luca replied, his dark eyes narrowing. "I thought you were an equal partner. Instead, you're a thief who couldn't even manage a simple burglary without leaving a trail for a twenty-eight-year-old housemaid to photograph."

Vanessa recoiled as if struck physically. "The maid... That little rat."

"Claire is an employee of this house," Luca corrected sharply. "And unlike you, she earned her keep honestly."

Footsteps echoed from the gallery entrance. Julian Vance was marched into the room between two broad-shouldered security operatives, his hands cuffed behind his back, his expensive tuxedo jacket rumpled. He looked terrified, casting a desperate glance toward Vanessa.

"Luca," Julian pleaded, his voice trembling. "She forced me into it. She said if I didn't help her secure the acquisition deeds, her father would cut our syndicate ties in New York. I had no choice!"

Vanessa turned on Julian with a snarl. "You cowardly piece of garbage! You agreed to it the second you realized Luca was planning to restructure the syndicate holdings!"

Luca watched the two of them unravel with cold detachment. He turned slowly toward the security chief standing near the door.

"Lock Julian in the basement holding room until dawn," Luca commanded. "As for Vanessa..." He looked back at his former fiancée, whose chest was heaving with furious adrenaline. "...pack her bags. Put her in the back of an unmarked town car, and have her driven to her father’s estate before midnight. If she steps foot in Chicago again, treat her like any other hostile trespasser."
