Chapter 20 - The Great Lakes Accord

The receiving room was stiflingly quiet despite the raging blizzard battering the reinforced glass outside. Three senior representatives of the Great Lakes Maritime Union—men who had controlled the shipping lanes of the Midwest for decades through intimidation and brute force—sat on the edge of the velvet sofas, looking entirely out of place in the opulent Moretti estate. Their heavy winter coats were crusted with melting snow, and their breath came in shallow, nervous gasps.

When the double doors opened and Luca Moretti walked in, flanked by Claire and Tomas, the three men stood up immediately as if pulled by invisible strings.

"Mr. Moretti," the lead representative, a burly man named O'Connor with a scarred jaw, stammered slightly. "We... we didn't expect you to grant us an audience in the middle of a blizzard. But with the shipping channels frozen and the federal regulators breathing down our necks—"

"You didn't come here to discuss weather conditions, Mr. O'Connor," Luca interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. He didn't offer them a seat; he walked past them to the large mahogany fireplace, turning to face them with his hands clasped behind his back. "You came because your union is bankrupt, your secondary smuggling routes have been seized by our logistics network, and your captains are refusing to sail unless we authorize their payroll."

Claire stepped forward, placing a single, leather-bound document on the glass coffee table between them. "This is the new operational accord," she said coldly. "Effective immediately, the Great Lakes Maritime Union relinquishes sixty percent of its equity voting rights to Moretti Holdings. All cargo manifests will be routed through our encrypted verification servers, and any strike or labor disruption will result in the immediate forfeiture of your remaining assets."

O'Connor stared at the contract in horror. "That's... that’s an absolute takeover! You’re stripping us of everything we built over thirty years!"

Luca slowly walked toward him, stopping mere inches away from the trembling union boss. The sheer, crushing weight of Luca’s presence made the room feel as though the oxygen had been sucked out.

"You built nothing, Mr. O'Connor," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously low. "You merely occupied a space that my family permitted you to rent. Now, the rent has increased. You can sign the ledger, or you can walk back out into the blizzard and try to swim across Lake Michigan. The choice is entirely yours."

Ten seconds later, O'Connor picked up the heavy fountain pen with trembling fingers and signed his name at the bottom of the page.
