Chapter 35 - The Ascendant Sky

The private transport aircraft cut through the upper stratosphere, leaving a silent, glittering contrail against the deep violet canvas of the upper atmosphere. Far below, the curvature of the earth marked the boundary between night and day, a stark reminder of the immense scale of the empire Luca and Claire had forged. Inside the cabin, bathed in the soft, ambient glow of recessed LED strips, the atmosphere was a sanctuary of absolute calm.
Claire sat across from Luca, her fingers resting lightly on the armrest of her leather seat, her eyes fixed on the panoramic window. The turbulence of their early years—the running, the hiding, the desperate calculations in dimly lit diners—felt like events from a distant century. They were no longer hunted outlaws clawing for survival; they were global architects whose word dictated the economic and technological pulse of human civilization.
"The latest telemetry reports from the Singapore hub just cleared," Claire noted, her voice carrying a quiet, rhythmic cadence. "Autonomous port expansion is ahead of schedule by three weeks. The local municipal councils didn't even attempt to negotiate the new trade tariffs. They simply signed and filed."
Luca leaned back, swirling a glass of dark amber whiskey, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that time could never dilute. "Compliance is the natural byproduct of absolute power, Claire. When people realize that resistance is mathematically futile, common sense takes over."

"It’s not just compliance," she replied, turning her gaze from the window to meet his eyes directly. "It’s architecture. We built a system so structurally sound that even if we stepped away tomorrow, it would maintain its own gravity."
"We aren't stepping away," Luca murmured, his voice dropping an octave into a register of quiet, absolute possessiveness. "An empire of this magnitude requires its creators to stand at the apex. Forever."
