Chapter 16 - The Silence of the Snow

By midnight, the estate was silent once again. The snow continued to fall in thick, heavy sheets, muffling the sounds of the city and turning the Chicago skyline into a faint, glittering smudge of light on the horizon.
In the master bedroom, the fire crackled warmly in the hearth. Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the dark expanse of the frozen lake, wrapped in a heavy cashmere robe. Luca walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of sandalwood and clean skin.
"Another ghost put to rest," Luca murmured, his voice soft against her ear.
"He wasn't a ghost," Claire replied quietly, her hands resting over his wrists. "He was just a man who forgot that empires aren't built on money—they're built on fear and absolute, unbroken loyalty."
"Are you afraid of me, Claire?" he asked, turning her slightly so she could look into his eyes.
She smiled—a rare, genuine expression that reached all the way to her eyes, softening the sharp, lethal brilliance that usually defined her.
"If I were afraid of you, Luca, I wouldn't be standing here," she whispered, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "I’m not afraid of the monsters in the dark because I helped you build the cage they live in."
He pulled her down onto the wide velvet sofa facing the fireplace, their bodies fitting together with the practiced ease of two people who had survived every nightmare the world could throw at them. Outside, the blizzard howled against the glass, trying in vain to break the seal of the Moretti household.
They had started as outcasts—hacker and syndicate boss, fugitive and heir—running from shadows in dimly lit diners and safehouses across a broken country. Now, they owned the horizon. Every ledger was balanced; every enemy was buried; every threat was neutralized.
"What do we do tomorrow?" Claire asked softly, resting her head against his shoulder as the fire slowly began to die down to glowing embers.

Luca kissed the top of her head, his dark eyes fixed on the flickering flames. "We wake up, we check the books, and we rule the world."
With their fingers intertwined and their hearts beating as one, they closed their eyes against the winter storm, ready to command the endless night of their eternal reign.
