Chapter 19 - The Cleansing Fire

By afternoon, the traitorous link had been isolated, scrubbed, and permanently welded shut with high-density titanium plates. The sub-basement server vault hummed with its usual clean, uninterrupted resonance, completely impervious to external interference.
Claire sat at her desk in the third-floor study, watching the snow continue to pile high against the windowpanes. The incident with the housekeeper had left a bitter, metallic taste in the air—a stark reminder that no matter how thoroughly an empire was cleansed, human weakness remained the most volatile variable in the equation.
Luca walked in carrying a fresh cup of black coffee, setting it beside her keyboard before pulling up a chair to sit directly opposite her.
"You handled that with uncharacteristic mercy," Luca observed quietly, watching her face.
"It wasn't mercy," Claire replied, taking a slow sip of the coffee. "It was pragmatism. Killing an old woman who was blackmailed by dead syndicates doesn't strengthen our position; it shows weakness. But exiling her with absolute finality sends a message to anyone else who thinks external leverage can penetrate our walls."
Luca reached across the desk, covering her hand with his own. His fingers were warm, steady, and unyielding. "The world outside our gates is falling apart, Claire. The blizzards have paralyzed three major states, the financial markets are stuttering under the weight of the supply chain freeze, and governments are begging us to stabilize their municipal bonds."
"Let them beg," Claire said, a fierce, brilliant light returning to her green eyes. "When they are desperate enough, we won't just lend them money; we’ll rewrite their constitutions. We’ll make our sovereignty the only law that matters."

The intercom chimed softly. Tomas’s voice filtered through: “Mr. Moretti, the maritime union delegation has arrived at the gates. They braved the blizzard to get here. They're waiting in the receiving room.”
Luca stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with crisp, deliberate movements. He looked down at Claire, a dark, predatory smile curving his lips. "Shall we go show them what an absolute ledger looks like?"
