Chapter 15 - Shadows on the Lake Shore

The first snow of the season arrived unannounced in mid-November, casting a blinding white blanket over the grounds of the Moretti estate and freezing Lake Michigan into a jagged sheet of ice. From the third-floor study, the view was no longer slate gray, but a monochromatic wasteland of frozen stillness.

Luca stood by the glass, his dark coat buttoned to the chin, watching a black sedan navigate the snow-packed private drive leading up to the security gates. It wasn't an unscheduled visitor this time; it was Marcus, their lead operative in the European division, returning directly from Zurich with a secured diplomatic pouch.

Claire sat at the mahogany desk, her fingers resting lightly on the keyboard of her terminal as she pulled up the live security feed from the perimeter cameras. "Marcus was supposed to arrive yesterday evening," she noted, her brow furrowing slightly. "The snowstorm delayed his private flight out of Frankfurt, but his transit logs show a three-hour unexplained stopover in Montreal."

"Montreal is the operational hub for the old French syndicate remnants," Luca said quietly, not turning from the window. "The ones who tried to buy our shipping lanes last year before we cut their financial arteries."

"If Marcus was compromised—or if he decided to hedge his bets by opening a backchannel—our entire European logistics chain is vulnerable," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, tactical calculation. She reached for the heavy titanium-cased secure phone on her desk.

"Don't call him yet," Luca interrupted, his voice calm, carrying that unmistakable authority that commanded instant obedience. "Let him walk through the front door. Let him sit at the desk, hand over the pouch, and look us in the eye. A traitor always gives himself away in the micro-expressions before he makes a move."

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the study opened, and Marcus stepped inside. He looked exhausted, his tailored gray suit rumpled from travel, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. He carried a heavy, lead-lined courier case handcuffed to his right wrist.

"Mr. Moretti. Miss Dawson," Marcus said, nodding respectfully as he closed the door behind him. "Apologies for the delay. The storm over the Atlantic grounded our bird in Nova Scotia for twelve hours."

Claire leaned back in her chair, resting her chin on her interlaced fingers. Her green eyes locked onto Marcus with the intensity of a predator studying its prey. "Nova Scotia, Marcus? Your flight plan filed through Montreal."

Marcus didn't flinch, but his breathing hitched for a fraction of a second—a microscopic hesitation that didn't escape Claire’s notice. "Montreal air traffic control redirected us due to icing on the eastern corridor," he explained smoothly, unlatching the briefcase with a mechanical key code. "I have the updated Swiss banking ledgers right here. Every account has been consolidated under our primary umbrella."

He placed the heavy case on the desk and popped the clasps, revealing stacks of encrypted physical drives and dense financial printouts.

Luca walked slowly across the room, stopping directly in front of Marcus. He didn't look at the case; he looked only at the operative's face.

"Marcus," Luca said softly, his voice dangerously smooth. "Who is financing your safehouse in Zurich?"

The color drained instantly from Marcus’s face. He tried to maintain his composure, stepping back half a step, but his hand hovered defensively near his jacket pocket. "I... I don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Moretti. My loyalty has never—"

Before Marcus could finish the sentence, the side door of the study burst open, and Tomas stepped in, holding Marcus’s confiscated secondary firearm and a printed intercepted communication sheet.

"We intercepted a digital wire transfer originating from a Montreal IP address routed to a private Swiss account bearing Marcus’s passport number," Tomas reported flatly, tossing the printed sheet onto the desk. "Amount: two million dollars. Sender: the remnants of the French syndicate."

Marcus stared at the paper, realizing the game was over. He lunged frantically for his shoulder holster, but before his fingers could even brush the leather, Luca’s hand shot out with terrifying, cobra-like speed, grabbing Marcus by the throat and slamming him violently against the oak bookshelf.

The books rattled; the heavy wooden frame groaned under the impact. Marcus choked for air, his hands clawing uselessly at Luca’s iron grip.

"You had everything," Luca whispered, his face inches from the traitor's, his eyes burning with cold, black fury. "Wealth, power, absolute protection. And you sold it for pocket change to dead men."

"Luca," Claire said quietly, her voice cutting through the violence like a scalpel. She didn't stand up; she simply watched the execution of justice with absolute detachment. "Don't soil the carpet."

May you like

Luca held Marcus suspended for another agonizing second before releasing his grip. The operative collapsed to the hardwood floor, coughing violently, gasping for air.

"Take him down to the basement," Luca instructed Tomas without looking back, wiping his hands with a linen handkerchief. "Feed the data drives into the secure incinerator. As for Marcus... let him reflect on the value of loyalty while the snow buries the driveway."
