Chapter 27 - Shadows in the Sunroom

By midday, the winter sun had grown warm enough to melt the icicles hanging from the estate's gothic stone lintels. In the grand sunroom overlooking the frozen lake, tall glass panes filtered the bright light into a warm, tranquil oasis filled with exotic indoor plants and comfortable velvet seating.
Claire sat on a chaise lounge, reading a rare volume of mid-century political philosophy, while Luca stood by the indoor water feature, his fingers tracing the rim of a crystal glass. The absolute quiet of the estate was a stark contrast to the blood, sweat, and algorithmic warfare that had defined their rise to power.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors leading from the main hallway clicked open. Tomas stepped into the room, his posture rigid, his expression tightly controlled.
"Mr. Moretti. Miss Dawson," Tomas began, keeping his voice low. "Our perimeter sensors flagged an anomaly at the outer security gate. A courier delivered an encrypted physical package addressed specifically to both of you. No return address, no digital signature."
Claire set her book down instantly, her green eyes narrowing with sharp, analytical focus. "An unmonitored physical drop? After we scrubbed every trace of opposition from this hemisphere?"

Luca turned away from the water feature, his dark eyes hardening into obsidian glass. "Bring it in, Tomas. Let's see what kind of ghost thinks it can still rattle our chains."
Tomas stepped aside, signaling to a guard who carried a heavy, lead-lined metallic case. The guard placed it carefully on the glass coffee table before retreating silently from the room.
