Chapter 1 - "**THE MAFIA BOSS WATCHED ME CARRY A HEAVY SOUP TRAY PRESSED AGAINST MY HIP—THEN HIS FIANCÉE SAID, “HER HAND GOT CAUGHT IN THE LINEN CLOSET,” BEFORE HE HAD ASKED WHY I COULDN’T HOLD IT NORMALLY.**

I almost made it to the table.
Six more steps.
That was all I needed.
My name is Claire Dawson.
I was twenty-eight, worked as a housemaid in Luca Moretti’s Chicago home, and that night my left hand was swollen beneath a thin black glove that wasn’t part of my uniform.
Nobody had questioned it.
Not the cook.
Not the other housekeepers.
Not the twenty-three guests seated beneath the chandeliers for Luca Moretti’s engagement dinner.
Because people rarely study the hands of the woman bringing them food.
Luca Moretti did.
The tray held six porcelain bowls of soup.
Normally I carried it with both hands.
That evening, my left fingers wouldn’t close properly.
So I balanced most of the weight on my right palm and pressed the edge of the tray against my hip.
Awkward.
Unprofessional.
But possible.
I only needed to survive dinner.
That was what I kept telling myself.
Finish the shift.
Collect the hours.
Go home.
Forget what happened at 4:20.
Especially that last part.
At the head of the table sat Luca.
Thirty-nine.
Dark suit.
White shirt.
Quiet enough that everyone else seemed louder around him.
Beside him sat Vanessa Bellini.
Red silk gown.
Diamonds at her ears.
A smile so polished nobody would have guessed she had cornered me upstairs less than three hours earlier.
I kept walking.
One step.
Two.
The soup shifted.
I tightened my right hand beneath the tray.
My injured left hand stayed pressed against my stomach.
Then one bowl slid half an inch.
I caught the tray against my hip.
Porcelain clicked.
Every conversation near Luca stopped.
Vanessa looked irritated.
“Careful.”
“I’m sorry.”
I steadied myself and reached for the first bowl.
Luca’s voice stopped me.
“Claire.”
My stomach tightened.
“Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
“Why are you wearing one glove?”
I looked down.
The glove suddenly felt enormous.
“I cut my hand.”
Vanessa’s fork stopped.
Luca noticed.
“When?”
“This afternoon.”
I reached for the soup again.
He didn’t let me.
“How?”
And before I could answer—
Vanessa said,
“She caught it in the linen closet.”
My hand froze above the tray.
For two seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Luca turned toward his fiancée.
Vanessa smiled.
“What?”
He looked back at me.
“Did you?”
I could feel her eyes on me.
“Yes.”
Luca leaned back.
“What happened?”
“The door closed on my hand.”
Vanessa reached for her water.
Luca watched her fingers touch the glass.
“Which door?”
“The upstairs linen closet.”
He nodded once.
“What were you doing there?”
“Putting away sheets.”
Vanessa added,
“She was carrying towels too.”
That was her second mistake.
Luca looked at her.
“You saw this happen?”
“No.”
“Then how do you know what she was carrying?”
Vanessa paused.
“She told me.”
His eyes moved to me.
“Did you?”
I hesitated.
“Yes.”
Too late.
He had already seen the hesitation.
Luca pointed toward the glove.
“Take it off.”
My heartbeat climbed into my throat.
“It’s fine.”
“Claire.”
I slowly pulled at the cuff.
The glove came away.
My palm was swollen.
Two fingers were wrapped together.
But Luca didn’t look at the swelling first.
He looked at the bruising around my wrist.
Four narrow marks.
Almost parallel.
His face changed.
“That didn’t come from a closet door.”
Vanessa sighed.
“Oh, Luca.”
He ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“What happened?”
“I told you.”
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“You told me what somebody expected you to say.”
My eyes lifted.
Straight toward Vanessa.
I regretted it immediately.
Because Luca followed my gaze.
Vanessa’s face remained composed.
Almost.
“Claire,” he said, “are you afraid of losing this job?”
My eyes burned.
“Yes.”
Vanessa leaned back.
“She’s making this much more dramatic than it was.”
Luca turned toward her.
“You were there.”
It wasn’t a question.
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“I never said that.”
“No.”
He looked at her for another second.
“You didn’t have to.”
Then he stood.
“Claire, put the tray down.”
“I can finish.”
“You’re done for tonight.”
“I need the shift.”
“You’re being paid.”
“I don’t need charity.”
Something shifted in his expression.
“It isn’t charity.”
His eyes went to Vanessa.
“It’s time.”
I didn’t understand what that meant.
Vanessa did.
Her smile disappeared.
Luca called the housekeeper.
“Take Claire upstairs. Call Dr. Harris.”
Vanessa pushed back from the table.
“She doesn’t need a doctor.”
Luca looked at her.
“How do you know?”
Silence.
Then I left.
And Luca did something Vanessa clearly wasn’t expecting.
He let dinner continue.
No accusation.
No confrontation.
No questions.
He talked about the wedding.
Asked about flowers.
Listened to a guest discuss a new restaurant opening downtown.
By dessert, Vanessa was smiling again.
At 10:14, she went upstairs.
Luca waited exactly three minutes.
Then walked into his study and called security.
“Pull the upstairs hallway cameras from four until five.”
A pause.
Then—
“We have them.”
“Send everything.”
The footage appeared on his monitor.
4:16 P.M.
I walked upstairs carrying folded sheets.
Both hands working normally.
No glove.
No bandage.
I entered the linen room.
Thirty seconds later, Vanessa appeared.
She checked the hallway.
Then entered behind me.
Luca leaned closer.
Four minutes passed.
Vanessa came out alone.
She closed the door.
Then—
locked it.
Luca stopped moving.
“Pause.”
The image froze.
Vanessa’s hand was still on the key.
“What time does Claire come out?”
Security skipped forward.
4:31.
Eleven minutes later.
The door opened from inside.
I stepped into the hallway.
My left hand was pressed against my chest.
My face was pale.
And something small was clenched between the fingers of my right hand.
Luca stared at the screen.
“Zoom in.”
The image sharpened.
A small silver memory card.
Nothing else.
Luca’s voice dropped.
“What is that?”
“We don’t know.”
“Find out.”
Five minutes later, security called back.
“We checked Claire’s locker.”
Luca stood.
“You found it?”
“Yes.”
“What’s on it?”
A pause.
“Twenty-seven photographs.”
“Of what?”
“Mostly nothing important.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Mostly?”
Another pause.
“The last four were taken inside your private study.”
Luca stopped.
“My study?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
Vanessa’s bedroom was directly above him.
“What do they show?”
Security hesitated.
“The first shows Vanessa opening the bottom drawer of your desk.”
Luca said nothing.
“The second shows her removing a document.”
“And the third?”
A longer pause.
“Vanessa handing it to someone.”
Luca’s voice became very quiet.
“Who?”
“We can’t see his face.”
Luca closed his eyes for half a second.
“And the fourth photograph?”
This time security didn’t answer immediately.
“Tell me.”
“The man finally turns toward the camera.”
Luca gripped the edge of his desk.
“Who is he?”
A breath.
Then—
“Your best man.”
Luca went silent.
But security continued.
“Boss… there’s something written on the back of the document Vanessa gave him.”
“What?”
Another pause.
“Your wedding date.”
And underneath it—
May you like
the words:
DO IT BEFORE HE SAYS I DO.
