Chapter 17 - The Iron Frost

The blizzard did not relent with the coming of dawn; instead, it intensified, wrapping the Moretti estate in a howling vortex of whiteout conditions that completely severed the compound from the outside world. Inside the master suite, the air was warm, scented with cedarwood and the faint, bitter trace of spent coffee beans. Claire was already awake, sitting at the mahogany writing desk with her tablet lit, reviewing the overnight encrypted telemetry reports from the European and Asian logistical hubs.

Luca stepped out of the private bathroom, a dark towel slung over his broad shoulders, his dark hair damp from a cold shower. He walked silently across the thick Persian rug, pausing behind Claire to rest his hands on the high back of her chair. His eyes scanned the scrolling columns of data—shipping tonnage, financial transfers, satellite tracking metrics. Everything was green. Every node was responsive.

"The storm has grounded all commercial flights out of O'Hare," Luca noted, his voice deep and resonant in the quiet room. "Tomas reports the perimeter sensors are clear, but the drifts along the north wall are nearly six feet deep."

Claire turned her head slightly, leaning back against his chest. "Good. Let the rest of the world freeze in its own incompetence. When the weather clears, we have the scheduled summit with the maritime union representatives from the Great Lakes corridor. They need to understand that the new tariff structure isn't open for debate."

"They already know," Luca replied, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "They saw what happened to Marcus in Zurich. People who negotiate with us don't bring counter-proposals; they bring compliance."

The intercom on the desk chimed softly, breaking the domestic stillness. Tomas’s gravelly voice came through the speaker: “Mr. Moretti, Miss Dawson. Apologies for interrupting your morning, but we have an automated security flag on the sub-basement server cluster. A low-frequency carrier wave is trying to handshake with our local sub-net from an external marine cable five miles off the shore.”

May you like

Claire’s eyes flashed with instant, lethal alertness. She straightened up immediately, her fingers flying across her keyboard to bring up the sub-net diagnostics. "A handshake? We severed and burned every legacy interface in the Atlantic and Pacific basins last spring. Nothing should be transmitting on that frequency."

"Unless it isn't an external transmission," Luca said, his tone instantly dropping into absolute coldness as he stepped around the desk to look at her screen. "Unless someone inside the compound has a secondary transmitter."
