Chapter 28 - The Relic of the Past

The metallic case sat in the center of the sunroom table, cold and ominously heavy. Luca stepped forward, his fingers unlatching the dual mechanical clasps with a crisp, metallic snap. He lifted the lid, revealing a thick stack of aged, yellowed documents bound with a faded red ribbon, alongside a single flash drive crafted from raw, unbranded brushed aluminum.
Claire rose from the chaise lounge, walking over to stand beside him. She picked up the top document, her eyes scanning the faded typewritten text.
"This isn't from a modern syndicate," Claire whispered, her breath catching slightly as she recognized the institutional letterhead. "This is from the old federal oversight committee—the one that investigated your uncle’s inner circle before the Collapse."
Luca picked up the aluminum flash drive, turning it over in his palm. "Someone dug deep into the cold-storage archives of the old Department of Justice before we incinerated the servers in Langley. They found the unredacted master ledger—the original names of every political asset, judge, and corporate executive who funded the Moretti family's rise thirty years ago."
"If this gets leaked to the independent media networks, it won't destroy us financially," Claire analyzed rapidly, her tactical mind already mapping out the damage control vectors. "Our financial assets are untouchable. But it could fracture the absolute trust our regional governors and corporate partners have in our lineage. It creates a narrative of inherited corruption."

"A narrative requires an audience, Claire," Luca said coldly, his voice devoid of panic, radiating absolute, chilling authority. "And there is no audience left that hasn't already sworn allegiance to our ledger."
He walked over to the indoor fireplace, where a low, steady flame burned beneath decorative copper logs, and tossed the entire stack of documents—along with the aluminum flash drive—directly into the fire. The paper caught instantly, curling into black ash as the flames consumed the final remnants of a dead world's secrets.
