Chapter 8 - The Property Battle and the Stolen Heirloom

"We need to get back to the house right now," I said, jumping into the truck.

While Emily had been staging her desperate spectacle at Lily’s school, she had created a deliberate distraction. By the time Sarah and I pulled into my driveway twenty minutes later, my worst fears were realized.

The side garage door was slightly ajar.

I drew my authorized concealed sidearm, gesturing for Sarah to stay behind me as I cleared the house room by room. The living room was untouched, but the master bedroom was in complete disarray. Drawers were pulled open, clothes were scattered across the floor, and the heavy iron floor safe in my walk-in closet stood wide open.

Gone was the velvet jewelry box that had belonged to Rebecca—containing her vintage sapphire engagement ring, her grandmother’s pearl necklace, and the solid gold locket containing Lily’s baby pictures and Rebecca’s lock of hair.

Also missing was the emergency cash envelope containing five thousand dollars and the backup hard drives containing twelve years of family home videos.

"She didn't do this alone," Sarah said, examining the tire tracks on the driveway outside. "Look at the width of these treads. It wasn't Emily’s sedan. It was Bradley’s truck."

"They used my spare key from the garage keypad to break in while Emily ambushed us at the school," I said, my fists clenching until my knuckles turned white. "They're holding Rebecca’s heirlooms hostage."

Suddenly, my phone pinged with a text from an unknown burner number. It was a photograph of Rebecca’s sapphire ring resting on a glass table next to a pawn shop receipt slip.

Accompanying the image was a message:

“One hundred thousand dollars cash in an un-traceable cashier's check by 5:00 PM today, or these old family memories go into the industrial gold melter at the diamond district. Sign the NDA, dismiss the restraining order, and release a video clearing Emily’s name. Ball is in your court, Colonel.”

"They're committing grand larceny and felony extortion," Sarah said, her voice shaking with outrage. "Daniel, do not reply to that text. They just handed us the rope to hang them with."

"I have something they didn't count on," I said, walking over to the bookshelf in the corner of my bedroom.

I reached behind the hardback volumes of military history and pulled out a miniature black lens.

"When I was deployed overseas, I installed encrypted military-grade motion cameras inside the master bedroom and study to monitor home security from my phone," I explained. "The footage isn't stored locally. It uploads directly to an encrypted private military cloud server."

I opened the app on my tablet.

There, in crystal-clear 4K resolution with high-fidelity audio, was Bradley Vance and Victoria Vance ransacking my closet at 8:50 AM.

"Make sure you grab the sapphire ring, Bradley!" Victoria’s voice boomed through the speakers. "That piece alone is worth twenty grand. Daniel will pay whatever we ask to get his dead wife’s trash back! That will cover our mortgage arrears for the rest of the year!"

"They're done," Sarah smiled coldly, pulling out her phone. "I’m calling Detective Miller at the Charleston Special Victims and Financial Crimes Unit. We are going to set a sting."
