Chapter 12 - Healing Lily's Scars

With the monster permanently locked behind bars, our home in Mount Pleasant finally became a sanctuary of peace.

We repainted every room, replaced the furniture Emily had chosen, and planted a brand-new rose garden in the backyard dedicated to Rebecca.

Lily’s tenth birthday arrived that autumn. We threw a massive party in the backyard—no stiff dress codes, no fake smiles, and no superficial high-society guests. Just thirty of Lily’s friends from school, Claire, my fellow officers, and Sarah.

In the middle of the afternoon, Lily ran over to the table where Sarah and I were slicing a massive homemade chocolate cake—with extra sweet frosting, exactly the way Lily loved it.

"Dad! Aunt Sarah! Look what I found in Mom’s memory box!" Lily beamed, holding up the solid gold locket that the police had returned to us.

I knelt down beside Lily, taking the locket gently in my hands. I opened the clasp, showing the tiny picture of Rebecca holding Lily when she was just a newborn.

"You know, Lily bug," I said softly, "your mother used to tell me that whenever you wear this, her love is right there wrapped around your heart."

Lily looked up at Sarah, her big hazel eyes shining with warmth. "Aunt Sarah? Do you think Mom would be happy that you stayed to help us?"

Sarah’s eyes grew moist. She knelt down next to Lily, brushing a strand of brown hair behind her ear. "Lily, your mom was my big sister and my best friend. There is nothing in this world that would make her happier than seeing you safe, smiling, and surrounded by people who love you more than life itself."

Lily threw her arms around both of our necks, pulling us into a tight, warm embrace. For the first time in two long years, the heavy shadow of grief and deceit was completely lifted from our home.
