Chapter 14 - Emily's Ultimate Reckoning

Two years into her twelve-year prison sentence, Emily Vance sat at a metal table in the visitation room of the Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution.
Her once-luxurious blonde hair was dull and chopped short, her skin pale, her fingernails bitten raw. Across the glass partition sat a junior state prosecutor handling the final asset liquidation of her bankrupt estate.
"Mrs. Vance," the prosecutor said bluntly, sliding a document across the counter. "This is the final settlement distribution. The remaining proceeds from your former business assets and vehicle seizures have been officially transferred into the Lily Carter Educational Trust Fund as court-mandated restitution."
Emily stared at the paper, her hands trembling with impotent rage. "Everything I had... went to that little girl?"
"Every last cent," the prosecutor replied coldly. "You have zero assets, zero property, and zero remaining appeals. When you are eventually released in ten years, you will leave this facility with nothing but the clothes on your back and a permanent felony record."
Emily closed her eyes, tears of bitter humiliation rolling down her cheeks. "Does Daniel ever ask about me? Has he ever visited?"
The prosecutor looked at her with a mixture of pity and disgust.

"Colonel Carter hasn't spoken your name in two years, Mrs. Vance. He and his family don't even remember you exist."
As the guards escorted a sobbing Emily back to her cell block, the steel doors slammed shut with a final, echoing thud—sealing the fate of the woman who thought she could destroy a child's heart for personal gain.
