Chapter 5 - An Ally in the Shadows

For the next four hours, the dining room table became our tactical command center. Sarah methodically laid out the boarding school brochure, the drafted letters, the bank inquiry forms, and the printed social media posts from Victoria and Emily.

"This isn't just a bitter ex-fiancée lashing out," Sarah analyzed, jotting down notes in her yellow legal pad. "This is a calculated extortion scheme. Emily knew that if she accused you of military-induced child neglect first, you would be forced into a defensive position. She wants you to offer a massive financial settlement just to make the public allegations disappear and save your military career."

"She asked for thirty thousand dollars yesterday at the altar," I noted. "Bradley demanded venue reimbursement last night."

"They're broke, Daniel," Sarah said, tapping her pen against the table. "I ran a preliminary background check on the Vance family before I drove over here this morning. Victoria Vance’s husband passed away three years ago, leaving behind massive debt. Their family home in South of Broad is in pre-foreclosure. Bradley has two outstanding civil judgments for unpaid business loans. Emily’s boutique PR firm went bankrupt eight months ago. They needed this wedding to survive."

A sudden realization struck me. "She targeted me."

"Of course she did," Sarah said grimly. "A respected, widowed colonel with steady income, excellent military benefits, government life insurance, and a deceased wife’s trust fund for a nine-year-old child. You were their golden goose, Daniel. And when you walked away at the altar, you pulled the plug on their entire financial life support."

Lily walked into the dining room, holding a small sheet of paper. She shyly handed it to Sarah.

"Aunt Sarah?" Lily murmured. "Emily gave me this before she locked the door. She told me to read it over and over so I wouldn't forget my place."

Sarah took the paper. Written on high-end stationery was a handwritten note:

“You are a guest in your father’s new life. If you speak about Rebecca today, you will ruin everything, and your dad will have to send you away to a place where bad girls go. Stay in this room until the party is over.”

Sarah’s hands trembled with suppressed rage as she read the cruel words. She carefully slid the paper into a transparent plastic evidence sleeve.

"This is child endangerment, psychological abuse, and intentional infliction of emotional distress," Sarah said, her voice deadly quiet. "Daniel, we are not just defending you against their slander. We are filing an emergency petition for an order of protection, a civil lawsuit for defamation and fraud, and criminal charges for unlawful restraint of a minor."

"What’s our first move?" I asked.

"We go back to the scene of the crime," Sarah said, snapping her briefcase shut. "The plantation venue has security cameras. We need that footage before Emily’s family tries to bribe the venue staff to erase it."
