Chapter 2 - The Fallout, Family Retaliation, and Secret Agendas

The drive back to our quiet home in Mount Pleasant was suffocatingly silent, save for the rhythmic hum of the truck’s engine and Lily’s occasional sniffles from the back seat. Claire was sitting beside Lily, softly humming a tune and stroking her hair, while my phone on the dashboard dashboard screen lit up like a Christmas tree.

47 Missed Calls: Emily Vance.

18 Missed Calls: Victoria Vance (Mother-in-law).

12 Missed Calls: Bradley Vance (Brother).

63 Unread Text Messages.

I reached over and flicked the phone completely off.

When we pulled into our driveway, the reality of the situation hit me like a physical blow. The front porch still had the welcome mat Emily had bought two months ago—The Carters: Established 2024. It was an obscene mockery.

"Claire, take Lily upstairs, please," I said quietly, opening the truck door. "Help her get out of that dress. Make her some hot chocolate and put on her favorite movie. I’ll be in my study."

"Daniel," Claire said, placing a firm, supportive hand on my arm. "You did the right thing. Don't you dare second-guess yourself for even a fraction of a second. If you had married that woman, she would have destroyed Lily's spirit piece by piece."

"I know," I replied, my jaw aching from clenching my teeth so hard. "I just can't believe I was blind enough to let a viper into our home."

After ensuring Lily was safely tucked in with her favorite stuffed elephant and a warm cup of cocoa, Claire joined me in the kitchen. I turned my phone back on. The sheer volume of venom that poured in was staggering.

A voicemail from Victoria Vance played on speaker:

"Daniel Carter, you are a psychotic coward! You humiliated my daughter in front of our entire social circle! The florist, the caterer, the venue—everything was non-refundable! Bradley is already contacting our lawyers. We are suing you for breach of contract, emotional distress, and defamation! You will pay for every single penny of this day, or I swear to God I will ruin your military career!"

Then came a string of texts from Emily herself:

“Daniel, please pick up. You completely misunderstood me. I was stressed! I was having a panic attack! I didn't lock her in, the door must have jammed on its own! I love Lily! You know I love her! How could you throw away our future over a misunderstanding?”

Two minutes later, another text:

“If you think you can just discard me like trash after I gave you two years of my life, you’re dead wrong. I gave up job opportunities for you. I took care of your damaged kid. You owe me.”

"Damaged kid," Claire repeated, her eyes blazing with fury. "There it is. The mask didn't just slip, Daniel; it shattered into a million pieces."

"She was never stressed," I murmured, staring out the kitchen window into the twilight. "She was calculated. She waited until the very last second, when she thought I wouldn't dare cause a scene, to assert complete dominance over Lily. She wanted to prove to Lily that she was disposable."

Suddenly, there was a loud bang on our front door.

I walked to the foyer and pulled back the curtain of the side window. Standing on my porch was Bradley Vance—Emily’s twenty-six-year-old deadbeat brother who lived off family money and an endless stream of failed business ventures. He was wearing his groomsman tuxedo, unbuttoned at the collar, smelling of alcohol and cheap arrogance.

"Open the damn door, Carter!" Bradley yelled, banging his fist against the wood. "You don't get to ditch my sister at the altar and hide like a dog! We need your signature on the venue damage waivers and the settlement check right now!"

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the heavy mahogany door wide open.

Standing six-foot-two in my military boots, I looked down at Bradley. His fist froze mid-air, his smug expression flickering with sudden, instinctive dread.

"You have exactly five seconds to remove your foot from my property, Bradley," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

"Listen here, Colonel," Bradley sneered, trying to puff out his chest. "You think you can scare me? You broke my sister's heart! You ruined our family's reputation! My mom already posted a video explaining how you had a violent PTSD flashback at the altar and endangered everyone! Social media is already eating you alive!"

The air in my chest turned to pure ice. They were already attacking my name, my service, and my family.

"Five seconds are up," I said.
