Chapter 11 - The Financial Ruin of the Grifter Clan

The legal dominoes fell with devastating speed over the next six months.

With the evidence made public, the Savannah widower came forward to file a multi-million-dollar civil fraud lawsuit against Emily Vance for her past actions. Several former clients of Emily’s defunct PR firm filed additional charges for embezzled funds and fraudulent billing.

The Vance family estate South of Broad was seized by the bank and sold at a foreclosure auction to satisfy outstanding debts and court-ordered restitution to Daniel and Lily.

Victoria Vance was sentenced to four years in state prison for grand larceny, conspiracy, and extortion.

Bradley Vance, having prior convictions, received six years for burglary, extortion, and trafficking stolen property.

Emily Vance faced the harshest penalty of all. Convicted of Felony Unlawful Restraint of a Minor, Child Abuse, Grand Larceny, and Wire Extortion, she was sentenced to twelve years at the Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution, with no possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, the court issued a lifetime restraining order prohibiting her from ever contacting Lily or Daniel Carter.

The day Emily was transported to the state penitentiary, I stood outside the courthouse steps holding Lily’s hand.

A gaggle of reporters thrust microphones toward us, asking: "Colonel Carter, do you have any final words for the woman who tried to destroy your family?"

I looked directly into the camera lenses.

"My daughter is not a stepping stone. My late wife's memory is not currency. And real family is built on protection, honesty, and love—things people like Emily Vance will never comprehend."

I turned away, ignoring the flashing cameras, and walked down the steps with Lily skipped happily beside me.
