Chapter 6 - The Dark Past Uncovered

At 1:00 PM, Sarah and I pulled up to the gates of Magnolia Grove Plantation, the venue where the nightmare had unfolded twenty-four hours earlier.

The venue manager, an elderly gentleman named Arthur Pendelton, was visibly nervous when he saw us step into the main leasing office.

"Colonel Carter," Mr. Pendelton said cautiously. "I... I truly regret the disturbance that occurred yesterday. Mrs. Vance has already called my office six times demanding that we release the security logs to her private investigator, claiming you assaulted a minor on our premises."

"Mr. Pendelton," Sarah stepped forward, presenting her official legal credentials. "I am Sarah Bennett, legal counsel for Colonel Daniel Carter and his daughter, Lily Carter. If Mrs. Vance or anyone representing her attempts to access or delete surveillance footage from yesterday afternoon, they will be committing felony destruction of evidence in an active criminal investigation."

Mr. Pendelton swallowed hard. "Of course, Ms. Bennett. We have zero desire to be involved in any illegal activity. We preserved all hallway and courtyard footage as standard protocol."

Ten minutes later, we were sitting in the security room, watching the high-definition monitor.

The time stamp read: 2:48 PM—exactly twelve minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to begin.

On the screen, the back corridor leading to the utility and laundry room was clearly visible. Lily was standing in her blue dress, holding her flower basket. Emily walked into the frame, her bridal gown swishing behind her.

Emily leaned down, speaking harshly into Lily's face. Lily shrank back, visibly frightened. Emily grabbed Lily’s arm firmly, dragged her into the utility closet, slammed the heavy metal door, and turned the external brass latch into the locked position. Emily then checked her makeup in a small compact mirror, smiled coldly, and walked casually toward the garden archway.

"Got you," Sarah whispered, a fierce, triumphant glint in her eyes. "There's your 'accidental door jam.' There's your 'misunderstanding.' It’s premeditated unlawful restraint of a child."

Sarah turned to the manager. "I need an official, encrypted copy of this footage transferred to this USB drive immediately, along with an affidavit of authenticity."

"Right away, ma'am," the technician replied.

As we walked back to the car, Sarah’s phone buzzed with an email alert from her private investigator. She opened the attachment, and her jaw dropped.

"Daniel... you won't believe what else we just uncovered," Sarah said, turning the tablet toward me.

The report detailed Emily Vance’s history in Savannah, Georgia, five years prior. Before moving to Charleston, Emily had been engaged to another wealthy widower—a real estate developer with two young sons. Three weeks before their scheduled wedding, the man’s eight-year-old son was hospitalized for severe dehydration after being locked in an attic storage room during a family party.

Emily had claimed the child was playing hide-and-seek. The distraught father broke off the engagement, but Emily walked away with a sixty-thousand-dollar non-disclosure settlement to avoid a public scandal.

"She’s done this before," I said, a wave of sickening horror washing over me. "This isn't just cruelty. It's a calculated pattern of isolating vulnerable children from their widowed fathers."

"And this time," Sarah said with icy resolve, "she picked the wrong father, the wrong daughter, and the wrong lawyer."
