Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the School Gate

The next morning was Wednesday. Despite everything, I wanted to give Lily a sense of normalcy, so Claire and I drove her to her elementary school. Lily was nervous, afraid that the kids or teachers had seen the viral video, but I held her hand all the way to the school's front steps.
"Remember, Lily bug," I told her, kneeling to look into her eyes. "The truth is our armor. You did nothing wrong. You are brave, you are loved, and your dad has your back forever."
Lily smiled, kissed my cheek, and ran inside to join her third-grade classmates.
I decided to wait in my truck across the street for an hour just to ensure everything remained peaceful. It was a military instinct that ended up saving my daughter from another traumatic ambush.
At 8:45 AM, a silver sedan pulled up directly in front of the school’s no-parking drop-off zone.
Emily Vance stepped out of the vehicle, dressed in an oversized beige trench coat and dark sunglasses, holding a high-end smartphone on a handheld stabilizer gimbal. She wasn't alone; a freelance videographer she frequently hired for her PR firm was trailing right behind her with a directional microphone.
My blood boiled. She was attempting an ambush video—trying to corner Lily during morning recess to record a staged "heartfelt reconciliation" or catch a distraught reaction to fuel her online victim narrative.
I leaped out of my truck, slamming the door.
"Emily!" I roared across the street.
Emily jumped, startled by my sudden presence. She quickly pointed the camera toward me as I strode across the asphalt, moving with the terrifying speed of an infantry commander advancing on a hostile target.
"Daniel!" Emily spoke loudly into the microphone, instantly putting on her theatrical, trembling voice. "I just wanted to see Lily! A mother has a right to check on her daughter after such a traumatic weekend! You're keeping her from me!"
School security officer Marcus, a retired marine I knew well, stepped out of the front doors, immediately sensing the threat.
"Back away from the school gate, Emily," I commanded, stopping ten feet from her. "You are not her mother. You never were. And you are currently violating school safety protocols by filming minors without administrative consent."
"I am her legal guardian-to-be!" Emily shrieked, dropping the sweet act as Marcus stepped between her and the gate. "Daniel, you ruined my life! My boutique lost three major corporate clients this morning because of your lies! Everyone is whispering about me! You owe me a public apology on video right now, or I will file for emergency protective custody through family court!"
"You want to talk about custody?" Sarah’s sharp voice cut through the morning air.
Sarah stepped out from behind my truck, holding a manila folder with an official red seal from the Charleston County Court.
"Emily Vance," Sarah said, serving the papers directly into Emily’s chest. "You have just been officially served with a Temporary Restraining Order granted by Judge Harrison this morning. You are legally forbidden from coming within five hundred feet of Daniel Carter, Lily Carter, their home, their school, and their places of work."
Emily’s face turned an ugly shade of gray. "What is this nonsense?!"
"That is a court order," Sarah stated calmly. "And if you don't turn around, get into your car, and delete every frame of footage you just recorded outside this elementary school within thirty seconds, Officer Marcus and the Charleston Police will arrest you on the spot for criminal contempt and stalking."
Emily glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think you won, Daniel? You haven't seen anything yet. I still have the keys to your life."
She spun on her heels, got into her car, and sped away.

"What did she mean by 'the keys to your life'?" Sarah asked, turning to me with a sudden frown.
A chill ran down my spine. The spare house keys. Rebecca’s jewelry.
