Chapter 9 - Masking the Truth

The silence that fell over the boardroom was so absolute you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents.

Vanessa dropped her wine glass; it shattered against the hard carpet floor. Daniel jumped out of his chair so violently his leather seat tipped over backward. Uncle Martin's face drained of every ounce of color, turning an ash-gray shade of terror.

"J-Julian..." Daniel stammered, backing away against the glass window wall. "You... your legs..."

"My legs are fine, Daniel," I said, my voice echoing across the room like a crack of thunder. "In fact, I've never stood taller."

"This is a trick!" Uncle Martin shouted, slamming his hand on the table, trying desperately to regain control. "He's wearing leg braces! He's faking recovery to disrupt a legal corporate vote!"

I walked slowly down the length of the long mahogany table, my stride powerful, smooth, and measured. I stopped right behind Uncle Martin's seat, placing my hands heavily on the back of his chair.

"Dr. Pendelton," I called out.

The side door opened, and Dr. Pendelton walked in accompanied by two state federal investigators and the Chief of Police.

"For the last eight weeks," I announced calmly, looking directly into the camera lenses of the media gallery outside, "I have maintained a complete physical deception under federal protective oversight. Why? Because three months ago, my vehicle was deliberately sabotaged."

The board members began whispering frantically.

"Harrison, bring up the monitor feed," I instructed.

The giant presentation screens on the wall flickered to life.
