Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Crash

The heavy oak doors of my private study clicked shut, sealing out the fading laughter and classical violin strings echoing from the ballroom below.
Standing inside the dim room were three men: Dr. Arthur Pendelton, my personal physician; Marcus Thorne, my chief legal counsel; and Harrison, my head of private security.
Without a word, I reached down, tossed the gray cashmere blanket onto the leather couch, and stood up straight. My spine popped pleasantly as I stretched my legs, walking steadily toward the mahogany desk.
"You took a major risk down there tonight, Julian," Marcus said, adjusting his silver rimmed spectacles. "Vanessa’s verbal abuse was atrocious, but if anyone noticed a subconscious muscle twitch in your calves, the whole strategy collapses."
"She didn't notice," I replied smoothly, pouring three fingers of straight rye into a crystal tumbler. "Vanessa was too intoxicated by her own perceived victory. She sees what she wants to see: a helpless, broken bank account."
Harrison stepped forward, sliding a leather folder onto my desk. "We retrieved the telemetry logs from your wrecked vehicle, boss. The brake line failure wasn't due to wear and tear. Someone spliced the hydraulic line with a thermal knife—designed to leak slowly under friction so the fluid would exhaust right when you hit the mountain turns."
My pulse hardened into ice. "So it wasn't just opportunism. It was attempted murder."
"And Daniel was the last person to have access to your garage pass that afternoon," Harrison added coldly. "We tracked a confidential offshore transfer of two million dollars into a holding account under his mother's maiden name, routed from Vance Enterprises."
I took a slow sip of rye, letting the heat settle in my chest. Daniel had been my college roommate. I had given him equity, power, and prestige. Vanessa had given him a price tag.
"Let them believe the plan is working," I said, gazing out the window at the rain sweeping across the lawn. "They want control of Sterling Global. They want my shares voted by proxy under a court-appointed guardianship. Let them launch the coup."

"And what about the housemaid?" Dr. Pendelton asked quietly. "Clara. She stood up to Vanessa down there."
I paused, remembering the soft warmth of her hand as she tucked the blanket back over my knees. "Keep an eye on her, Harrison. In a house filled with blood-thirsty wolves, I need to know if she's genuinely sheep... or another handler in disguise."
