Chapter 12 - The Stand

By sunset, the storm had cleared over the city, leaving behind a crisp, golden sky reflecting against the glass towers of downtown.
I returned to Sterling Manor on foot, stepping out of the town car and walking up the wide stone stairs of the front entrance under my own power for the first time in months.
The manor was empty of vultures. The noise offake friends, greedy relatives, and scheming socialites had been washed away completely.
Standing at the top of the grand marble staircase in the foyer was Clara.
She wore her simple housemaid's uniform, her hands folded neatly in front of her, watching me walk toward her with a look of overwhelming relief and quiet joy.
I climbed the stairs slowly, stopping on the landing directly in front of her.
"It's over, Clara," I said softly.
"I saw the news," she whispered, a soft tear spilling over her lashes. "They arrested everyone. You saved your life... and your father's legacy."
"I didn't save it alone," I replied, taking her small hand into mine. Her hand was warm, gentle, and real. "When I was sitting in that chair, surrounded by hundreds of wealthy people who claimed to care about me, only one person stood up to remind me of my human worth."

"I only did what was right, Julian."
"No," I corrected gently, stepping closer. "You showed me what true loyalty looks like. And I am never letting that go."
