Chapter 5 - The Pre-Nuptial Pressure

The following morning, two hours before the board's noon deadline, Vanessa barged into my private sitting room accompanied by her mother, Eleanor, and a high-profile family estate attorney.
I was seated near the balcony, covered once again in the heavy gray blanket.
"Julian darling," Vanessa announced with forced sweetness, setting a thick stack of legal documents on my lap. "We need to handle this family matter before your board meeting."
"What is this?" I asked faintly.
"An addendum to our pre-nuptial agreement and asset protection trust," Eleanor chimed in, smoothing her silk blouse. "With your health in such a precarious state, Vanessa’s financial future must be protected from corporate litigation. We are transferring the deed of Sterling Manor and thirty percent of your personal stock holding into a joint spousal trust managed by Vanessa."
"And if I refuse?"
Vanessa leaned over my chair, her perfume cloying and suffocating. Her eyes turned sharp as needles.
"If you refuse, Julian, Daniel and your uncle will release your full medical evaluation to the press today. They will declare you mentally incompetent, drag your name through the mud, and force a receiver to take everything anyway. Sign the trust, and I stay by your side as your devoted wife. Refuse, and you die alone in an institution."
It was a masterclass in extortion. She wasn't even trying to hide her malice anymore.
"I need... my lawyer to review this," I whispered, holding my hand weakly against my forehead.
"Your lawyer works for the corporation, not your heart," Vanessa hissed, thrusting a pen into my fingers. "Sign it, Julian. Sign it right now, or I walk out that door, call the press conference, and ruin what's left of your life."
I held the pen above the signature line. My fingers trembled—a deliberate performance of frailty.
Suddenly, the doorway opened. Clara stepped inside carrying a tray of morning tea.
"Get out!" Eleanor barked at Clara. "We are in the middle of a private family signing!"
Clara paused, looking at my hand holding the pen, then looking at Vanessa's aggressive posture hovering over me.
"I apologize, ma'am," Clara said firmly, not retreating a single inch. "Mr. Sterling’s physician left strict orders. He is not to execute binding documentation without Dr. Pendelton present during stress hours."

"You impudent little servant!" Vanessa snapped, stepping toward Clara with her hand raised. "How dare you interrupt us!"
"Leave her alone, Vanessa," I said, my voice suddenly dropping its breathy rasp, taking on a cold, steady tone that made Vanessa freeze in her tracks.
