Chapter 9 - The Private Investigator's Shocking Discovery

By Wednesday afternoon, Eleanor Vance had brought in a specialized forensic investigator named Jack Mercer—a former FBI financial crimes agent who now operated an elite private intelligence firm in Detroit.
We met in Eleanor’s high-rise conference room overlooking the Detroit River. Jack Mercer threw a thick manila folder onto the center of the glass table.
“Sarah, Eleanor,” Mercer began, pulling up a chair, “Tyler Adams is a small fish in a very dirty pond. But Vanessa Green? She’s an absolute predator.”
I leaned forward, my pulse quickening. “What did you find, Jack?”
“Vanessa Green isn't even her legal name,” Mercer revealed, tapping the folder. “Her real name is Vanessa Groth. Six years ago, she was forced to resign from a major European cargo carrier following an internal probe into fuel-rebate fraud and illicit private charter leasing out of Frankfurt. She changed her name, moved to the United States on a corporate visa, and used forged industry credentials to land the regional logistics directorship here.”
Eleanor leaned back in her leather chair, a sharp grin forming on her lips. “And Tyler was her perfect pawn.”
“Exactly,” Mercer nodded. “Tyler had the senior commercial flight hours and an unblemished FAA record. Vanessa needed a compliant, high-ranking pilot to sign off on maintenance and repositioning manifests without asking questions. She seduced him, flattered his massive ego, promised him millions in offshore wealth, and convinced him to drain his domestic assets into AeroVenture Global—an account where she holds 90% voting control and sole international withdrawal authority.”
My jaw dropped in sheer astonishment. “Tyler drained our family savings into an account he doesn’t even control?”
“He’s an idiot who thought he was a mastermind,” Mercer said bluntly. “Vanessa was using Tyler to extract money from his marriage, fund her offshore holding accounts, and the moment the federal heat came down, she was planning to board a private flight to Zurich alone, leaving Tyler to take the entire criminal fall for the fraudulent flight logs.”
The poetic irony of the situation struck me with immense force. Tyler had thrown away his devoted wife, broke his seven-year-old son’s heart, and humiliated our family in front of two hundred passengers—all for a woman who was actively setting him up to be her federal scapegoat.
“What about the $85,000 he stole from our savings?” I asked.
“The court-ordered asset freeze hit the domestic holding account just four hours before Vanessa’s scheduled transfer to the Cayman Islands,” Mercer smiled. “Every single dollar of your family savings has been secured by the receiver. It’s sitting safely in an escrow account under Eleanor’s supervision.”
I let out a long, shuddering breath. Mason’s college fund was safe. Our home was safe.
“There’s one more thing,” Mercer added, pulling out a glossy invitation card from his folder. “Tomorrow night is the Great Lakes Aviation Gala at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel. It’s the biggest charity event of the year for the regional airline industry. The CEO, the board of directors, the FAA regional administrator, and every major aviation executive will be in attendance. Vanessa and Tyler bought a VIP table to celebrate their 'new venture.'”
Eleanor looked at me, a brilliant, dangerous spark in her eyes. “Sarah, as an active aerospace consultant and the legal spouse of Captain Adams, you are officially on the guest list. Would you like to attend?”
May you like
I looked at the invitation, then looked at the folder containing the complete evidence of Vanessa’s fraud and Tyler’s complicity.
“Eleanor,” I smiled, feeling a power I hadn't felt in a decade. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
