Chapter 6 - The Hidden Flash Drive

The garage smelled of motor oil, lawn clippings, and the leather cleaner Tyler used on his aviation jackets. In the far corner, beneath a heavy wooden workbench covered in tools and spare model airplane parts, sat a large, olive-drab military footlocker secured with a heavy brass padlock.

I had walked past that footlocker every day for eight years. Tyler had always told me it contained his grandfather’s old Korean War medals and sentimental aviation memorabilia from his flight academy days. He kept the only key on his personal keychain.

I knelt down on the cold concrete floor, wedged the heavy screwdriver into the locking mechanism of the latch, and leaned my entire body weight into it.

With a loud, metallic CRACK, the brass lock snapped free from the wood.

I threw open the heavy lid. Inside, stacked in neat, obsessive rows, were dozens of black-bound official pilot logbooks dating back to his earliest flight school training in Florida. Beneath the books lay stacks of printed FAA clearance forms, private airfield receipts, and several sealed manila envelopes.

I pulled out the most recent logbook—the one marked with this current calendar year.

Flipping through the pages, I immediately noticed the glaring discrepancies. Tyler had logged dozens of flights departing at 2:00 AM from small municipal airfields across Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana—flights that never appeared on the official commercial airline schedules he taped to our kitchen refrigerator. Next to each flight entry was a handwritten authorization code starting with the initials VG—Vanessa Green.

I dug deeper into the bottom of the footlocker. Beneath a stack of old uniform blazers, my fingers brushed against a small, hard plastic object taped securely to the underside of the wooden base.

I peeled back the heavy black electrical tape.

It was a high-capacity, encrypted Kingston USB flash drive, along with a handwritten note containing a series of alphanumeric codes.

My hands trembling with adrenaline, I carried the flash drive and the latest logbooks inside, locked the garage door behind me, and plugged the drive into my laptop at the dining room table.

The prompt appeared on my screen: ENTER DECRYPTION KEY.

I typed in the first alphanumeric sequence from the note. The drive unlocked instantly.

What unfolded across my screen was an absolute goldmine of corporate corruption and personal betrayal.

The drive contained hundreds of digitized documents: bank statements for offshore accounts based in the Cayman Islands, private charter manifests, and encrypted email threads between Tyler and Vanessa dating back nearly two years.

Tyler hadn't just fallen in love with Vanessa last year. They had been orchestrating a massive, multi-million-dollar fuel-skimming and unauthorized luxury charter syndicate. Vanessa used her position as scheduling director to route high-value, off-the-books corporate clients onto regional aircraft during maintenance downtime, while Tyler piloted the illicit flights and logged them as “routine repositioning runs.”

The profits—millions of dollars—were being funneled directly into AeroVenture Global Holdings, an entity registered under Vanessa’s maiden name and Tyler’s pilot ID.

And then, I opened a folder labeled Family Relocation Strategy.

Inside was a detailed timeline, written in Tyler’s own notes.

The plan was chilling in its calculated cruelty. Tyler had planned to execute the public proposal on the flight to Chicago to establish an irreversible public breakup. Immediately following the flight, he was scheduled to transfer the remaining family funds into the offshore entity, claim personal bankruptcy in Michigan, file for sole custody of Mason by claiming I was financially unstable and mentally unfit to care for our son, and relocate with Vanessa to a private estate in Switzerland by the end of the summer.

He hadn't just wanted to leave me. He had planned to strip me of my money, my home, and my child, leaving me destitute on the streets while he flew into the sunset with millions in stolen corporate cash.

“Mom?”

I jumped, quickly angling the laptop screen away.

Mason was standing at the entrance of the dining room, rubbing his tired eyes, clutching his small blue blanket. He looked tiny and fragile in his superhero pajamas.

“Good morning, my brave boy,” I said, keeping my voice utterly calm and warm as I closed the laptop. I walked over, knelt down, and wrapped my arms tightly around his small body.

“Is Dad coming home today?” Mason whispered into my shoulder.

I pulled back slightly, looking into his sweet, innocent face.

“No, sweetheart,” I said gently, kissing his forehead. “Dad isn’t coming home. But you and I are going to be just fine. In fact, we’re going to be better than fine. I promise you, with everything I have, nobody is ever going to hurt us again.”

Mason looked at me, a tiny flicker of trust returning to his eyes, and nodded.

I stood up, holding my son’s hand.

May you like

Tyler thought he held all the cards. He thought he was the master pilot controlling the flight path of our lives. But he had left the flight recorder right in my hands.

It was time to take control of the cockpit.
