Chapter 14 - Rising from the Ashes

One year later.

The morning sun streamed through the expansive glass windows of the Ann Arbor corporate headquarters of AeroSafe Technologies—the avionics consulting firm where I was now the Executive Vice President of Global Fleet Logistics.

My career had skyrocketed. Under my leadership, our firm had secured contracts with four major international airlines, modernizing fleet safety protocols and implementing transparent cargo tracking systems that were adopted nationwide. I was earning more than Tyler had ever made as a senior captain, and our financial future was permanently secured.

Our home had been completely transformed into a place of warmth, laughter, and light. The old, dark furniture was replaced with bright, modern decor, and the garage that once held Tyler’s secrets was now a fully equipped art and robotics workshop for Mason.

Mason was thriving. He was at the top of his second-grade class, playing soccer on the weekends, and surrounded by loyal friends who loved him for who he was. Tyler had completely faded from our daily lives, relegated to supervised, infrequent letters that Mason rarely chose to read. Mason had learned that a true parent isn't defined by a uniform or a title, but by the love, presence, and protection they provide every single day.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, Mark Reynolds and I took Mason out to a small private airfield in Canton, Michigan. Mark had been taking me on weekend flight lessons for the past six months, helping me earn my own private pilot’s license.

Mason stood by the hangar railing, wearing his favorite aviator sunglasses, watching with pure excitement as I completed the pre-flight inspection on a sleek, single-engine Cirrus SR22.

“Mom!” Mason cheered, running up to the wing as I stepped down from the cabin. “Are we ready for takeoff?”

“Captain Mason,” I smiled, adjusting his sunglasses. “Your aircraft is officially ready for boarding.”
