Chapter 15 - The Sky Belongs to Us (The End)

The engine of the small Cirrus hummed with a smooth, powerful vibration as we lined up on Runway 27.
Mason was seated securely beside me in the co-pilot seat, wearing his aviation headset, his face glowing with pure, uncontainable joy. Through the windshield, the wide, open sky stretched out before us—endless, bright, and completely free of clouds.
“Tower, this is Cirrus Seven-Two-Whiskey, ready for departure,” I spoke clearly into my headset microphone.
“Cirrus Seven-Two-Whiskey, Detroit Tower, you are cleared for takeoff, Runway 27. Have a wonderful flight,” the controller replied.
I smoothly pushed the throttle forward. The aircraft accelerated down the asphalt, the wheels lifted effortlessly off the ground, and we soared into the golden afternoon sky.
Below us, the green fields and sparkling blue lakes of Michigan expanded into a breathtaking panorama. The world felt vast, beautiful, and full of limitless possibilities.
I reached over and took Mason’s small hand in mine, giving it a gentle squeeze.
“How does it feel, buddy?” I asked over the intercom.
Mason pressed his face against the window, looking out at the sunlit horizon, a radiant smile stretching across his face.
“It feels amazing, Mom,” Mason answered, his voice ringing with pure happiness. “Because this time, the right person is flying the plane.”
I smiled, feeling a deep, profound peace that settled into every corner of my soul.
