Chapter 10 - Turning the Tables at the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel was a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, black-tie tuxedos, and flowing silk evening gowns. Over four hundred high-ranking aviation executives, airline board members, and senior captains were mingling over champagne, celebrating the industry’s annual achievements.

At Table 4, seated right near the front stage, Tyler and Vanessa were holding court.

Tyler was wearing a brand-new tailored tuxedo, holding a glass of Scotch, laughing with a group of regional airline vice presidents. Vanessa was sitting beside him in a dazzling emerald-green backless gown, showing off a massive sapphire-and-diamond ring on her finger. They looked confident, untouchable, basking in the glow of their fabricated success.

“Captain Adams!” one of the junior directors toasted. “We all heard about that legendary announcement on the Chicago flight! Bold move, my friend! Very bold!”

Tyler beamed, puffing out his chest. “When you know what you want in life, Richard, you have to take the controls and fly directly toward it. No regrets.”

Just then, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The chatter in the entryway suddenly quieted down as heads began to turn.

I walked into the ballroom with my head held high, radiating absolute elegance and poise. I was wearing an immaculate, floor-length midnight-blue satin gown with diamond teardrop earrings. My dark hair was styled in sleek, sophisticated waves, and on my wrist was the watch my father had given me when I earned my master’s degree in aerospace engineering. Walking beside me was Mark Reynolds, the VP of Operations from my new aerospace firm, and Eleanor Vance.

Tyler’s laughter died instantly in his throat. His Scotch glass trembled in his hand, the ice cubes rattling against the crystal.

“What the hell is she doing here?” Vanessa hissed under her breath, her face stiffening into a mask of pure fury.

I didn’t look at them. I didn’t have to.

I walked straight toward the VIP reception area, where the regional CEO of Tyler’s airline, Arthur Pendelton, was speaking with two senior FAA officials.

“Mr. Pendelton,” Mark Reynolds greeted warmly. “I’d like you to meet our new Senior Fleet Compliance Director, Sarah Adams.”

Pendelton’s eyes widened with immediate recognition and immense respect. “Sarah Adams! Of course! Mark has been telling me about your brilliant work on data telemetry. It’s an absolute honor to meet you.”

“The honor is mine, Mr. Pendelton,” I smiled gracefully. “In fact, I’ve brought some very important compliance documentation regarding your regional charter fuel logs that I believe you and the FAA administrators will find… extraordinarily illuminating.”

Across the room, Tyler watched in absolute horror as Eleanor Vance stepped forward and handed a sleek leather binder directly to the CEO and the federal officials.

Vanessa stood up abruptly from Table 4, her face pale as a ghost, grabbing her designer clutch. “Tyler, we’re leaving. Right now.”

“Vanessa, wait… what did she give them?” Tyler stammered, his knees shaking beneath the table.

Before Vanessa could take three steps toward the exit, four men in dark federal suits stepped out from the ballroom foyer, blocking her path.

The lead agent flashed a gold badge. “Vanessa Groth? Tyler Adams? We are with the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General and the FBI. We have a warrant for your immediate arrest regarding commercial fraud, unauthorized aircraft operation, and federal wire evasion.”

The entire ballroom went completely silent. The jazz band stopped playing.

Four hundred pairs of eyes watched in stunned silence as the federal agents stepped forward.
