Chapter 8 - The Smear Campaign

At precisely 4:15 PM on Monday, the quiet suburban peace of our neighborhood was shattered.

I was in the kitchen preparing dinner for Mason when the sound of screeching tires echoed from the driveway. I parted the blinds and looked out.

A sleek, black luxury rental sedan had pulled up to the curb. Tyler stepped out of the driver’s side, wearing expensive designer sunglasses and a sharp tailored suit. But he wasn't alone. Vanessa stepped out of the passenger side, wearing dark sunglasses and a sleek beige coat, carrying an expensive leather briefcase.

They looked like two celebrities arriving at a photoshoot, completely devoid of shame.

Tyler marched up the front walkway, a smug, arrogant smirk plastered across his face, and aggressively twisted the front doorknob.

It was locked.

Tyler banged his fist against the heavy wood. “Sarah! Open this damn door right now! I’m here for my clothes, my passport, and my flight footlocker!”

I stood calmly on the other side of the glass, holding my phone, recording every second through the security camera monitor. I did not speak. I did not open the door.

“Sarah! Don’t play games with me!” Tyler yelled louder, rattling the handle violently. “Vanessa and I have a flight to catch back to Chicago tonight. If you don’t open this door in ten seconds, I’m kicking it in! I own this house!”

Vanessa stepped up onto the porch, folding her arms, looking directly into the doorbell camera with a condescending sneer.

“Sarah, be reasonable,” Vanessa called out in a smooth, patronizing voice. “You’re only making this harder on yourself and your child. Tyler is offering you a very generous settlement if you sign the mutual separation agreement today. If you force this into court, we will release documentation showing your history of emotional instability and severe postpartum depression. No judge in Michigan will let a distressed mother keep a child when Tyler can provide a luxury estate and elite private schooling.”

My blood boiled, but I remained utterly motionless behind the door. They were trying to provoke me into an emotional outburst, hoping I would scream or attack them so they could call the police and file a false report.

Suddenly, two dark blue Ford Explorers with flashing red and blue lights turned onto our street, pulling up directly behind Tyler’s rental car.

Tyler’s smug smile instantly vanished. He turned around, his eyes widening in confusion as two armed Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies stepped out of their vehicles.

“Tyler Adams?” the lead deputy called out, holding a thick stack of legal documents.

Tyler straightened his jacket, attempting to regain his pilot authority. “Yes, Officer. I’m Captain Tyler Adams. I’m actually glad you’re here. My estranged wife has illegally locked me out of my own residence—”

“Sir, keep your hands where I can see them,” the deputy commanded sternly, cutting him off mid-sentence. “I am serving you with an Emergency Ex-Parte Protection Order and a temporary restraining order issued by the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan.”

Vanessa gasped, taking an immediate step back toward the car. “Excuse me? On what grounds? I am an executive with—”

“Ma'am, you need to stay back,” the second deputy ordered firmly.

The lead deputy thrust the thick stack of papers directly into Tyler’s chest. “Mr. Adams, under the terms of this emergency order, you are prohibited from approaching within five hundred feet of this residence, Sarah Adams, or Mason Adams. Furthermore, all domestic bank accounts, joint assets, and corporate entities associated with your tax identification number have been placed under an immediate judicial freeze pending a federal asset review.”

Tyler’s face turned from pale to a sickly shade of green. “F-Frozen? What do you mean frozen? That’s impossible! I have international transactions scheduled for today!”

“Take it up with the judge at your hearing on Thursday, Mr. Adams,” the deputy said coldly. “Right now, you have two minutes to get into your vehicle and vacate this property, or you will be placed in handcuffs and transported to county jail.”

Tyler looked toward the front door, his eyes locking onto the glass where he knew I was watching. The arrogance, the smug superiority, the untouchable captain persona—it had all crumbled into raw, unadulterated terror.

Vanessa grabbed Tyler’s arm, frantically pulling him toward their rental car. “Tyler, let’s go! Get in the car now before the press gets wind of this!”

Tyler stumbled down the walkway, clutching the restraining order in his shaking hands, and scrambled into the driver’s seat. The black sedan sped away down the street, its tires squealing against the pavement.

I stepped away from the door, took a long, deep breath, and let the peace of our home wash over me.

Round one belonged to us.
