Chapter 7 - A Mother's Vow

By Monday morning, my strategy was fully operational.

Before Tyler could send his high-priced Chicago attorney after me, I needed a legal titan of my own. At 8:00 AM sharp, I walked into the downtown Detroit offices of Marcus & Vance, the most formidable family and corporate litigation firm in the state.

Sitting across from me was Eleanor Vance—a sharp, silver-haired attorney renowned for dismantling corrupt corporate executives in divorce and asset-recovery proceedings.

For two hours, Eleanor reviewed the documents I had copied from Tyler’s encrypted flash drive. Her sharp blue eyes moved across the bank statements, the illegal charter logs, and Tyler’s handwritten Family Relocation Strategy.

When she finally set down the papers, she took off her reading glasses and looked at me with profound respect.

“Sarah,” Eleanor said, her voice rich with steely confidence, “in thirty years of practicing law, I have rarely seen a spouse hand me an open-and-shut case of this magnitude. Your husband and his mistress haven't just committed gross marital misconduct; they have engaged in federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion.”

“I don’t care about getting revenge, Eleanor,” I stated firmly, leaning forward across the desk. “I care about two things: absolute, sole legal and physical custody of my son Mason, and the full recovery of our stolen family assets so he has a secure future. Tyler threatened to declare bankruptcy and take Mason from me.”

Eleanor let out a sharp, dismissive chuckle. “Mr. Tyler Adams is in for a catastrophic awakening. In less than two hours, I am filing an emergency ex-parte motion with the Wayne County Circuit Court. We are freezing every domestic account tied to his name, placing an immediate lien on your marital home to prevent him from touching it, and securing a temporary restraining order and full protective custody order for Mason.”

“What about the $85,000 he wired to AeroVenture?” I asked.

“Because that wire transfer occurred less than twenty-four hours before a formal separation and was clearly designed to defraud the marital estate, the judge will issue an immediate freeze on AeroVenture’s domestic accounts,” Eleanor explained. “Furthermore, because AeroVenture is tied to unauthorized corporate activity, I am contacting the Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of the Inspector General and the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.”

A deep sense of relief washed over me. For the first time in forty-eight hours, the suffocating weight on my chest began to lift.

“What should I do when Tyler shows up at the house today?” I asked.

Eleanor slid a formal document across the desk. “Keep the front doors locked. The sheriff’s department will be serving him with these papers the moment he steps onto your street. You do not speak to him. You do not negotiate. Let the law do its work.”

Leaving Eleanor’s office, I felt a surge of energy I hadn't felt in years. I drove straight to the school district office to ensure Mason’s emergency contact forms were updated, explicitly removing Tyler and Vanessa from any pickup authorization.

Next, I made a call to an old colleague from my aerospace engineering days—Mark Reynolds, who was now a Vice President of Operations at an advanced avionics consulting firm in Ann Arbor.

“Sarah?” Mark answered, surprised and delighted. “It’s been years! How are you?”

“Mark, I’m stepping back into the industry,” I said without hesitation. “I remember you telling me last year that your firm was looking for a senior systems integration consultant for commercial fleet compliance. Is that position still open?”

“Are you kidding me?” Mark exclaimed. “Your data architecture work on our defense contracts was legendary. If you’re ready to come back, I’ll have an offer letter on your desk by tomorrow morning. We need someone who knows fleet logistics inside and out.”

Walking back to my car in the afternoon sunshine, I took a deep, clean breath.

Tyler had tried to reduce me to nothing. But within twenty-four hours, I had secured the best legal defense in the state, protected my son, and reclaimed my professional career with a high-paying executive role.

A mother fighting for her child is the most dangerous force on earth. Tyler was about to find that out the hard way.
