Chapter 9 - The Holbrook Defense Conglomerate—Cutting the Head Off the Snake

The ocean waves crashed violently against the jagged cliffs surrounding the Holbrook Coastal Estate.

At 06:45 a.m., dense morning fog rolled across the manicured lawns. Ten-foot-tall wrought-iron gates reinforced with steel armor plating stood shut, guarded by eight private security mercenaries wearing tactical body armor and carrying suppressed submachine guns.

Inside the estate's command center, Richard Holbrook stood over his security chief, his face dark with rage.

"Where is the helicopter?!" Richard barked.

"Pilot reports five minutes out, sir," the security chief answered. "Sir, Kensington and Senator Sterling have both been taken into federal custody. The entire city’s power structure has collapsed overnight. Rumors on the encrypted channels say it’s Vanguard. The Phantom Commander."

"Vanguard is a myth!" Richard snarled, slamming his fist onto the stainless-steel console. "Alexander Vance is a ghost story invented by the NSA to scare politicians! My defense contracts are worth ten billion dollars! I own the private security sector! No one breaches this estate without my permission!"

Behind him, Wyatt Holbrook sat on a leather sofa, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his bottle of water. "Dad... what if they come here? What if that girl’s father comes for me? You didn't see the look in his eyes at the hospital... he looked like he wanted to butcher us!"

"Shut up, Wyatt!" Richard snapped. "You're a Holbrook! You will fly to our estate in Monaco, and our legal team will tie this case up in international courts for the next twenty years. You will never spend a single day inside a prison cell!"

BOOM.

A low-frequency acoustic shockwave rolled through the compound.

The lights inside the command center instantly shifted to emergency red. The bank of twelve security monitors displaying the front gate suddenly showed static.

"Perimeter breach at Gate One!" a voice screamed over the radio. "Thermal sensors offline! We have fast movers in the fog! They just bypassed the primary hydraulic gate in three seconds flat! They're not using vehicles—they're on foot!"

"Deploy full lethal force!" Richard yelled into the comms. "Shoot on sight! Protect this house!"

Outside in the fog, Task Force Vanguard moved like an elemental force of nature.

Leo sat in the mobile electronic command vehicle a quarter-mile away, his fingers dancing across his terminal. "Command grid scrambled. Their radios are broadcasting white noise. Their automated turrets are locked in diagnostic mode. Commander, you have a clear path to the courtyard."

Hayes was positioned eight hundred yards away on a high-altitude cliff overlooking the compound. Through his suppressed long-range precision rifle, he fired high-density non-lethal kinetic rounds that struck the tires and engine blocks of every security vehicle parked in the driveway, disabling them with surgical accuracy.

Marcus led the breach. Carrying a heavy ballistic shield, he moved through the fog like a juggernaut. Three private mercenaries rounded the corner, raising their rifles, but Marcus slammed the shield forward, sweeping two of them off their feet while his sidearm delivered precise, non-lethal disabling shots to their shoulders and thighs.

I walked directly through the center of the courtyard, my carbine held in the low-ready position.

Any mercenary who stepped into my path was neutralized within half a second—disarmed by hand-to-hand tactical counters refined in hundreds of black ops missions. Their weapons clattered uselessly across the cobblestones as they fell groaning to the ground.

In less than three minutes, sixty private mercenaries had been completely neutralized without a single casualty on our side.

I stood before the reinforced steel doors of the main mansion.

"Marcus," I said. "Breach."
