Chapter 10 - Wyatt Holbrook’s Private Army—A Deadly Stand at the Coastal Estate

CRACK-BOOM.

A linear shaped charge blew the reinforced double doors off their hinges with a blinding flash and a concussive roar.

Smoke poured into the opulent two-story foyer of the Holbrook mansion. Richard Holbrook’s personal elite security detail—four former foreign special operators—drew their weapons from behind marble pillars, opening fire in a desperate barrage.

Marcus stepped through the smoke with his ballistic shield, absorbing the impacts of the rounds with metallic clangs that echoed through the grand hall.

Hayes fired two precise shots through the high stained-glass windows above, disarming the two flankers before they could re-target. I stepped around Marcus’s shield, moving with the fluid, lethal grace of a ghost. In two swift motions, I closed the distance on the remaining two bodyguards, striking pressure points on their necks and sending them crashing unconscious onto the polished marble.

The hall fell dead silent, save for the hum of the emergency ventilation.

Richard Holbrook stood at the top of the grand spiral staircase, holding a tactical shotgun pointed directly at my chest. Behind his legs, Wyatt cowered like a terrified child, weeping and covering his ears.

"Stay right there, Vance!" Richard roared, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You take one more step up these stairs, and I’ll blow you in half! This is private property! I am a sovereign defense contractor!"

I lowered my carbine, letting it hang by its tactical sling against my chest. I looked up at him, my eyes completely vacant of fear.

"You have one shell in that chamber, Richard," I said, my voice echoing off the high cathedral ceiling with absolute, terrifying calm. "If you fire it and you do not kill me, what do you think happens next?"

Richard’s hands began to shake.

He was a man used to ordering death from behind a mahogany desk thousands of miles away. He had never looked into the eyes of a true warrior who had walked through the valley of the shadow of death and conquered it.

"You... you can't touch us," Richard stammered, his voice losing its thunder. "I have contacts in the Joint Chiefs of Staff! I know the President!"

"The President just signed the executive order canceling your ten-billion-dollar defense contract five minutes ago," Julian’s voice echoed through the mansion's integrated intercom system. "Holbrook Global Defense has been placed under federal receivership for high treason and illegal domestic espionage."

Richard Holbrook’s shotgun slowly dipped toward the floor.

Wyatt shrieked from behind him, scrambling on his hands and knees to run down the hallway toward the private master bedroom. "Dad! Do something! Don't let him get me!"

I walked up the marble stairs, stepping right past Richard Holbrook. The fallen billionaire didn't even attempt to raise his weapon; he simply collapsed onto the stairs, weeping in complete and total ruin.

I followed Wyatt down the hallway.

He had locked himself inside the master bathroom, frantically trying to open the window to jump into the swimming pool below.

With a single front kick, the heavy mahogany door splintered open.

Wyatt spun around, backing into the glass shower enclosure until his back hit the tile. He held up his hands, sobbing hysterically. "Please! Don't hit me! Don't break my jaw! I'm sorry! I'm sorry about Chloe! It was a mistake! We were drunk!"

I stepped into the room. I didn't raise a fist. I didn't draw a knife.

I simply reached out, grabbed the collar of his designer shirt, and dragged him out onto the balcony overlooking the driveway where six armored Federal Marshal transport vehicles had just arrived, their sirens painting the foggy morning in sweeping flashes of blue and red.

"You told Chloe her father was a nobody," I said, leaning down so my voice resonated in his ear. "You told her you were sovereign over the law."

May you like

Wyatt could only sob, shaking uncontrollably as the Federal Marshals charged up the stairs with high-tensile steel cuffs ready.

"Take a good look at your empire, Wyatt," I whispered. "It’s gone."
