Chapter 13 - Chloe Opens Her Eyes—A Father’s Promise Written in Scars

At 02:00 p.m. that same afternoon, the afternoon sunlight streamed warmly through the tall, clear windows of the private recovery suite at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
The sterile hospital smell had been replaced by the sweet fragrance of fresh lilacs and yellow sunflowers—Chloe’s favorites—filling every vase on the windowsill.
Dr. Miller and the world’s foremost maxillofacial reconstructive surgeons had just completed the final procedure to remove the surgical wires from her jaw. Thanks to the advanced medical technology deployed by Vanguard’s medical specialists, her jaw had healed flawlessly, the compound fractures mended with microscopic titanium plates that left virtually no external scarring.
Chloe’s eyelids fluttered softly.
She turned her head on the soft pillow and slowly opened her bright blue eyes.
I was sitting in the armchair beside her bed, holding her hand, exactly as I had done every single day and night for the past six weeks. I was wearing my simple, faded olive jacket.
"Chloe," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion as my thumb gently caressed the back of her hand.
Her lips parted slowly. For the first time in nearly two months, she spoke—her voice soft, slightly raspy, but clear and whole.
"Daddy..."
Tears welled up in my eyes, spilling over the weathered scars on my cheeks. I leaned forward and pressed my forehead gently against her knuckles. "I'm here, baby. Daddy is right here."
"I... I had a dream," she whispered, her fingers curling around mine with real, restored strength. "I dreamed that three monsters broke into the world... and an eagle with wings of lightning came and tore their walls down."
I looked up at her, smiling gently through my tears. "It wasn't a dream, sweetheart. The monsters are gone. They will never, ever hurt you or anyone else again."
"Did you... did you stop them, Daddy?" she asked softly, looking deep into my eyes, perhaps seeing for the first time the hidden depths of the man who had raised her.

"I kept my promise to your mother," I said softly. "I kept you safe."
Chloe smiled—a beautiful, radiant, unbroken smile that lit up the entire room. "Thank you, Daddy."
