Chapter 5 - The Touch of a King Who Never Shows Mercy

The days that followed blurred into a surreal mix of luxury and tension. Chloe was not allowed to leave the estate grounds, which were patrolled day and night by armed security and trained guard dogs.

Yet, despite the gilded confinement, Dominic treated her not as a liability, but with an attentive, brooding reverence that confused her heart.

Every evening, Dominic dined with her. At first, dinner was quiet, filled with polite inquiries about her comfort. But slowly, the walls between them began to crumble.

Chloe discovered that beneath the terrifying reputation of the Boston mafia boss lived a man of profound intellect. Dominic spoke fluent Italian and French, possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of Renaissance art, and had taken over the Moretti empire at twenty-four after his father was betrayed and murdered by his own consigliere.

“You chose this life?” Chloe asked one night over dinner on the terrace, watching the moonlight dance across the black waves.

“No one chooses this life, Chloe,” Dominic said, swirling the dark red wine in his glass. “You are born into the fire, and either you burn to ash, or you become the one holding the torch. My father was weak because he trusted words. I rule because I only trust actions.”

“And you trust me?” she asked, tilting her head.

Dominic set his glass down. He stood up, walked behind her chair, and gently placed his large, warm hands on her shoulders. Chloe’s breath hitched at the contact. A delicious warmth spread through her veins.

“You had nothing to gain by writing that note,” Dominic murmured, his deep voice vibrating against the shell of her ear. “You could have hidden. You could have walked away. Instead, you put your life between me and a bullet. I trust you more than anyone who has sworn an oath of loyalty to my name.”

Chloe turned her head, looking up into his dark eyes. They were standing so close she could see the golden flecks in his irises.

“I didn’t want to see a man die,” she whispered.

“You saved more than a man,” Dominic said softly, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her cheekbone. “You saved my empire. And every day you spend in this house, you make me want things I thought I had buried years ago.”

“What kind of things?” Chloe breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“Peace,” Dominic whispered, his face descending toward hers. “A reason to come home.”

Before his lips could touch hers, a sharp knock at the terrace door broke the spell. Leo appeared, his face grim and pale.

“Boss,” Leo said urgently. “We have a problem at the perimeter. Valenti’s men just breached the lower gate.”
