Chapter 3 - A Million-Dollar Debt Erased Before Daylight

The iron gates of the Moretti estate parted like the jaws of a mythical beast. Perched on a cliff overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean, the mansion was a fortress of limestone, black slate, and bulletproof glass.
As the car came to a halt under the grand portico, a team of armed guards in discreet black suits opened the doors. Dominic stepped out first, offering Chloe his hand. When she hesitated, he reached inside, scooped her up into his arms, and carried her across the threshold as if she weighed nothing at all.
“Put me down! I can walk!” she cried out, her face burning crimson as guards stood at attention with straight faces.
“You’re shivering, and your shoes are ruined,” Dominic said dismissively, carrying her through the grand foyer adorned with white marble, crystal chandeliers, and oil paintings worth millions.
He carried her up a sweeping staircase and into a vast, luxurious guest suite featuring a king-sized canopy bed, a roaring fireplace, and a terrace overlooking the dark sea. He set her down gently on a velvet chaise lounge near the fire.
“Take a hot bath. There are clothes in the dressing room. My housekeeper, Elena, will bring up something warm to eat,” Dominic instructed, loosening his silk tie.
“Mr. Moretti, please,” Chloe begged, her voice cracking with exhaustion. “I just want to know what happens tomorrow. I have a shift at 11:00 AM. If I don’t show up, Callahan will fire me, and if I lose that job—”
“You will never step foot inside The Brass Lantern again,” Dominic stated with absolute finality.
“You don’t understand!” Chloe stood up, tears of frustration spilling over her eyelashes. “I have eighty-four thousand dollars in medical debt! If I miss a single payment, they will garnish whatever little money I have left. My mother died fighting for her life in that hospital, and I promised her I would clear her name. I can’t hide in your castle playing princess while my life falls apart!”
Dominic stood perfectly still, watching her emotional outburst without an ounce of anger. He pulled a sleek smartphone from his pocket, tapped the screen three times, and held it to his ear.
“Marco,” Dominic spoke into the receiver. “Mass General billing department. Account name: Bennett, Eleanor. Pay the balance in full. Wire an additional fifty thousand to the hospital’s oncology wing in Eleanor’s name. Have the legal release delivered to my desk by 6:00 AM.”
Dominic hung up the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. He took two slow steps toward Chloe, towering over her.
“Your debt is zero,” Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously smooth. “Your mother’s name is clear. And your only job now is to stay alive and let me take care of you.”
Chloe stood paralyzed, her mouth slightly open. “You... you can’t just do that.”
“I just did,” Dominic replied, his eyes softening as he looked down at her tear-stained face. “You gave me my life tonight, Chloe. Eighty-four thousand dollars is an insultingly small down payment for what I owe you.”

Before she could respond, he turned toward the door.
“Rest now,” he added, pausing at the threshold without looking back. “Tomorrow, the war begins.”
