Chapter 4 - Secrets Whispered in the Cold Marble Fortress

Chloe woke up to the sound of crashing waves and the aroma of freshly brewed espresso.
For the first thirty seconds, she stared at the high vaulted ceiling with its intricate crown molding, completely disoriented. Then the memories of the previous night crashed over her: the gun, the check, the gunfire, the armored car, and Dominic Moretti’s voice declaring that she belonged to him.
She sat up instantly. On the bedside table sat a silver tray with fresh fruit, croissants, and a folded official document.
With trembling fingers, she picked up the paper. It was a formal receipt from Massachusetts General Hospital, stamped PAID IN FULL - ZERO BALANCE REMAINING, signed by the chief financial officer.
A heavy sob escaped her throat. She pressed the paper against her chest, curling her legs beneath the heavy silk duvet. For three years, that debt had been an invisible anvil crushing her lungs every morning. With a single phone call, Dominic had shattered it into dust.
After a long shower in the sprawling marble bathroom, Chloe found an assortment of designer clothes hanging in the walk-in closet—all in her exact size. She chose a simple cream cashmere sweater and tailored dark trousers, feeling strange wearing clothes that cost more than six months of her previous salary.
She made her way down the winding staircase. The mansion was eerily quiet, save for the muffled voices coming from the double mahogany doors at the end of the east wing.
Chloe approached quietly, the thick Persian rugs muffling her steps. The door was slightly ajar.
Inside, Dominic stood behind a massive desk, leaning forward on his knuckles. Surrounding him were Leo and four other men with hardened faces and scars marking their skin. A large map of the Boston harbor and the North End was spread across the table.
“Salvatore Valenti thought he could take me out in public,” Dominic was saying, his voice cold and calculated. “He’s desperate. His shipping lines in South Boston are drying up, and he knows we control the ports. He hired an outside contractor from New York to keep his hands clean.”
“What do we do about the girl, Boss?” one of the lieutenants asked. “If Valenti discovers she was the one who tipped you off, he’ll send a cleanup crew to silence her before she can identify the shooter.”
“The girl stays with me,” Dominic snapped, his tone cutting like a blade. “Anyone who looks at her sideways dies. She is off-limits to everyone in this city. Is that clear?”
“Understood, Don Moretti.”
Chloe stepped back, her breath hitching. Her foot caught the base of an antique bronze vase, making it scrape against the hardwood floor.
Inside the room, five weapons were drawn instantly.
“Who’s there?” Leo barked, moving toward the door.
“It’s me,” Chloe whispered, stepping into the doorway with her hands raised slightly.
Dominic’s posture relaxed immediately, though his eyes remained fiercely intense. He waved his hand, and his men instantly holstered their firearms and filed out of the room in silence, each bowing their head slightly to Dominic as they passed.
“You shouldn't wander the halls without an escort,” Dominic said, walking around the desk toward her.

“I’m not a prisoner, Mr. Moretti,” Chloe said softly, meeting his gaze.
“No,” Dominic replied, stopping just inches from her. “You’re my guest. But in my world, an unescorted guest is a target.”
